I appreciate all answers in this thread - but why would I say "Hello" (ALO) and then call 177 to report a fire..?!

There are several Cypriot Turkish readers of this board: what does it really mean, "ALO"..?!

This is the number of the forest fires department, separate from the general fire service. This department is operational during the 'high risk' months of april and october. Alo, is hello, but usually, only used when replying to someone on the telephone.

ALO 177 is a service which you can use for warning. Alo 177 : Forest Fire, Alo 155 : Police etc...

@ msg 12, BlueButterfly: Possibly. But why would someone say "Hello" (ALO) and then dial the number to report a fire?

Just to confuse matters further the posters advertising Vodafone in Egypt were sprinkled with "ALO" amongst the arabic script. I just took it to be some universal reference to using the telephone.

ALO is a TURKISH word and how people usually (or customarily) says when answering an incoming phone call. It may as well be derived from English word hello sometime in the past. However, it does NOT mean hello in Turkish, it is just a phone-specific greeting word just to imply that the phone is picked up from the other end.

As for the way it is used in this context, this word has been used for specific quick reach phone numbers, like emergency, fire and so on.

I dont understand the actual purpose of this question, When the 'ring' is the actual sound a telephone makes and you can use it for ringing somebody, but this doesnt sound normal to you?

Saying hello or alo is not obligitary. You could just ring 177 to report the fire. But normally, when tc,s telephone anyone they start the conversation with alo. When my tc hubby arrives home he says alo as apposed to merhaba. If I was in the UK and rang the emergency services I would probably say, hello, I want the fire brigade, police or whatever.

▶ Thank you for your answer. It's good to read that you, out of the repliers in this thread and several hundred readers of the thread, are obviously the only one who knew what "ALO (177)" means. I for one didn't hence asked. Getting information is often the actual purpose of a question.
