Ideological wars are likely to decrease, (the trend is down) but could they be replaced by battles for valuable scare resources.

If there are vast reserves of oil (and I know their are many who are highly sceptical) is Turkey going to just stand by and watch those on it's door step prosper. If the GC's are striking up deal after deal with Turkeys neighbours, is it asking for trouble? Is the EU going to regret giving this little island so much power, whilst denying Turkey such status.

You are right that it could very easy escalate but I doubt the G.C.'s would be prepared to take it too far despite their confrontational history, I don't think there would be many willing to take on Turkey's Armed Forces which are reputedly the second largest in the World. Perhaps only Russia and America, although with the present situation America has created for itself, and the World in general, I am not sure they would be willing to get involved. As for Russia I am not sure what their Armed Forces would be capable of since the break up of the Soviet Union which would have been a very different kettle of fish. From my understanding the E.U. already regrets giving it's backing to the South and would be unlikely to want an escaltion to the point of conflict

Time will tell I suppose

Hi Gibson,

The Turkish armed forces are second largest in NATO not worldwide; that said the RoC is the second most militarized state after North Korea.

Hi ILC,

There is oil and gas off Cyprus but not a great deal and rather difficult to get at so not likely to happen unless the price goes up a lot more or supplies are very short - they say the next big war in the mid-east will be about water!

AWE

Hi aweverard

Water is definately a big issue. The ongoing saga between Israel and Palestine is not just ideological, there is also an ongoing dispute about water. There was an article in the cyprus mail yesterday about the climate in Cyprus.

Quote

“We have seen a 1.6 degrees Celsius increase in temperature here, which means Cyprus warms up faster than the rest of the world where the global mean increase is 0.8 degrees Celsius,”

Added to that, rainfall has not stopped falling since the 1940s. Average rainfall between 1941 and 1970 was 533mm in Cyprus. During 1971-2000, this dropped to 463mm, showing a significant decrease.

Cyprus also has the biggest water problem in the EU, according to the Centre’s Water Stress Index, which calculates the ratio between water being used versus available water. " end of quote

The world is still highly dependent on oil with demand growing not declining. Perhaps Turkey can exchange water for oil.

This was quoted on a programme I was watching about three week's ago on Prime. It was an Interview with 5 Euro M.P.'s from various countries.and the eaxact quote ( if I remember it verbatim) was;

It would seem apparent now that the E.U. was too hasty in granting membership to RoC and it would perhaps have been better to have waited ntil there had been a solution to the Cyprus problem. He went on to say this seemed to be the concensus of opinion after discussions with a number of other.M.E.P.'s. I can't remember the guy's name but he was from Sweden.

It has also been reported in the press that this is the case but whether you believe the papers is a personal choice.

By the way I am from Houghton le Spring and saw loads of Bands in Newcastle early 70's at City Hall and the old Mayfair.

the greek army or the roc stand no chance against turkey,s forces ,the turkish army can deploy 50,000 troops at shorter notice than any other country, and are one of the largest standing armies in the world and second largest army in nato.

however the greeks are very smart ,they are only killing time ,throwing a spanner in the works these are all ploys to make turkey look bad and slow down the talks ,which in my opinion are all but dead and buried .they are arm-twisting turkey and trying to provoke a hostile reaction so they can then in turn say too the rest of the world ,look i told you so ,they are still barbarians and will use force ,clever tactics .

they have no real intentions of drilling .

watch and learn in the coming weeks for more smart greek politics ,so far they have offered the t/cs nil and have only demanded ,so why are we still talking .

i just hope and pray that some of you guys are smart enough to see it panning out .

musin

long live the kktc

Gibson,

The Turkish army is nowhere near the second-largest in the world. It's number eight after China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, South Korea, USA and Vietnam.

Size isn't as important as capability, either.

And there's the rest of the world thinking Turkey does a perfectly good job of that by itself.

What world, the one that recently voted Turkey on to the UNSC or the one where Turkey is not a NATO member, EU candidate and strategic Western ally in a troubled region?

aweverard,

Turkey is only a temporary member of the UNSC - and any vote it makes can be vetoed by the permenent members.

And how long has Turkey been told to wait for EU membership? 10 years or so?

Who are you trying to impress?
