Just to let everyone who signed our Petition know that over 2000 signatures have now been received. This is really encouraging news and we intend to keep going and hopefully reach 5000. If anyone has not signed and wants to please visit the website at http://www.docmartintrnc.net/petition.

Many thanks to all who have already signed and your encouragement to continue.

I dont understand the purpose of this petition. I have read this and some other similar threads recently and everytime I have more questions than answers.

Who is doing the actual poisoning? Is it the government, do they have poisoning swat teams that go around dropping poisoned food? Is it local belediyes? If it is, did anybody go and actually speak to them about it? Do they accept it? Do they deny it? Is it individuals? If it is, how do you propose to track it down and fix the problem? What is the purpose of this petition? Who are you petitioning to(again)? Government? Belediyes? What is the goal of this petition? What and how are you intending to achieve it? Are you hoping that the government will make poisoning a crime? Even if so, you think this will solve the problem at hand and how? Why is 2000 signatures not enough? Why do we need 5000? Did you speak to somebody that said either bring 5000 signatures or they wont care? (cont)

I see this as an illusion of achievement, while you talking about 'really encouraging news' that 2000 digital signatures(with an aim of 5000, like that will make any difference over the current 2000) are collected that may or may not have any effect on the issue, dogs are still getting poisoned and die on the streets.

To me, an encouraging news would be like 'we spoke to xxx belediyesi and they promised to stop using poisons and will work to keep the streets clean' etc.

I guess some people will now say that I should be giving credit for the effort but so far, I have no idea what the effort is for. Nothing on the website says anything about how the signatures will be used.

Whatever it is that you are trying to do, 2000 signatures are plenty. Make up your mind about what to do with these signatures and do and maybe! it will make a difference.

I have neither the time or the inclination to reply in depth to your negative 'rant'. A response of 2000 positive and about 5 negative is enough 'encouragement' for me to continue.

Re Msg 4: Yes, but as Kemal says continue what exactly?

Where is this all going?

Alright saying you have neither the time or the inclination to reply in depth...etc. Buit isn't that part of running a campaign?

If you think Kemal's post was negative, you ain't seen nothing yet when you approach the authorities.

OK, you have numerical support - 2000 or more. But what is the action plan?

OK, my intention, and I appreciate that this may fail, is to gather enough signatures to perhaps encourage the Government of TRNC to implement stronger legislation against the sale of illegal poison here. This poison is banned by the EU and should Turkey join this organisation then it is quite likely that they will have to abide by this rule although of course this is not guaranteed. I realise that there have been previous campaigns on this issue and they seem to have failed. However, every drop in the bucket helps to keep this problem high profile and I am making the point that it is only a matter of time before a child touches the bait and, as the poison is so potent, this child may die. Is this not worth fighting for? I intend to present the Petition in person to the Ministry of the Interior taking with me, if necessary, an interpretor. Msg 5 I hope, in part, this answers your question.

I am sorry that you have seen my posts as negative, my intention was on the contrary. You cannot judge somebody for being curious on the unknown.

It does answer some of my questions as well, and raise a few more. At least now I know that banning a particular poison is the aim of this exercise and I know that this is within the capacity of the government. I also think that Ministry of Health and/or Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources are better suited to approach for this purpose.

May I ask what is the name of this poison?

I still think 2000 signatures is plenty to make an approach right now and gauge the reaction from the government.

I think the poison most people lay here is Lanate

OMG - Lanate? We were given this at a garden centre to kill the red palm weevil we had. No idea how dangerous it was because it was clearly just on display on a shop shelf for anyone to buy. How harmful is this to humans and any known side affects?

Lannate, a strychnine based produce I believe, is the poison responsible for the death of dogs and cats here. It was banned for sale in the South, however it still seems to be obtainable, from where I do not know. I have read that further action to ban this poison is due to come into affect there next year . It can cause death by inhalation, absorption and ingesting. It is very dangerous and the victim can suffer a horrible death as has been witnessed by many pet owners. Hence I do feel it is important to keep this issue high profile and at some point the Government must surely take notice of the dangers posed by the use of this poison.

Kemal - thank you for your suggestion as to the best Ministry to approach, I am grateful for that information.
