Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone had taken the plunge and had pool heating installed... if so, what method did you use and how effective has it been?

one of our pools is heated on our site ( sweetwaterbay ) or should i say can be heated ! but they never have it switched on as it costs so much to run acording to the management company.

I guess that one is gas heated? I was thinking more along the lines of solar panels to heat the pool. Once installed then minimal cost to run I would think.

Hello msg 1 and 2

we offered to renew the gas runned pool heating system of sweetwater approx 1,5 years ago.

the system is unefficient, mainly the heat exchanger, and therefore very expensive. Same time we offered a solarsystem as well to reduce the gas consumption.

If a solar system is proper installed, of course it runs.. but, you need to have ideas of the "to be achieved" temparatures. With "solar only" not everything is possible or only until a certain time (eg till december), or you may back it with a solar system or eg have a pool cover...

Please: do not "mixe up" locations. solar systems in GB are different then the ones for cyprus.

cheers, Peter

I am not familiar with the solar mats... I take it they sit on top of the water and it heats the pool from that position?!? Is that right?

I guess it was a solar pipe, or solar panel based system that was in my mind's eye, but equally open to the solarmat system if it works well.

Message 6. Thanks Peter, I am fully aware of the limited timeframe that could be expected and the only intention would be to make the May/June/early July swims more comfortable, along with the late Sep/Oct and poss Nov too. After that I would not really have any desire to use the pool; no point in getting out of a warm pool to cold air!! It would just be to extend the relatively short 'comfortable' swimming time that we have in Cyprus.

Are you seriously saying that June / early July swimming in your pool is not comfortable?? As a matter of interest - how deep is it ?

We have a solar cover that works very well and are swimming from end of April untill end of November last year.

Have enquired about solar panels ,cost for my pool 12X3 meters was 4,000 TL two years ago.

Yes

I have fitted a pool heater which works like a heat exchanger. It takes hot air out of the atmosphere and pumps water round it. It is supposed to be 9 times more efficient than other methods. It cost about £3.5k 3 years ago.

In April this year it raised the temperature from 20 to 25 in 3 days and the cost was acceptable but not cheap.

From the research I have done, which has only just started to be honest, I would have hoped that any system I purchased would warm the pool up from May, when the weather can be lovely and warm but the pool water quite cool... which for me is the same in June, still a big old shiver as you go in... not exactly comfortable. I am ex-RAF and we can be delicate souls!!!!!!

Forget about heating your pool, buy yourself a wetsuit and swim every day.

Had the pipework fitted with the new build 8 years ago heated by the oil boiler. Never used it as told the converter tank would be unlikely to give more than an extra degree or two and the boiler has to run continuous. Get in the sea for an early or late season swim its warmer.
