Do you celebrate Christmas ?

If so why ?

If you do, do you realise it really is not the day of Jesus birthday ( even if he really was born there is no written record of it outside the bible) .

I personally feel the event has been turned into a vulgar commercialised unchristian debacle that makes little or no reference to Christ or his message for humanity.

I loved christmas as a child & loved it whilst my kids were growing up,and although im now a grandmother i wont be in the UK to see my grandchildren's little faces opening their prezzies on xmas day,so the fun of christmas has gone for me,but like most people i never thought of it as a religious day, more santa, prezzies and loads of food. but as you grow up you can see the stress it can bring to a lot of people, all that shopping & preparing, many families fall out,it can be a big build up to the occasion, then a big let down,so no.xmas is in the past for me,although i still put up my tree every year and i'll talk on the internet with my family on the day to see how their day went, but that will be it for me.

btw, although i dont believe in jesus,he is mentioned in the koran but not as the son of god.

I don't believe its Jesus' birthday, i'm not religious, but I love the festival and seeing family and friends. As most people in England and Germany have time off, you can come together and enjoy. I also don't believe in the big commercialisation of christmas. We do not spend a lot, but we do try and meet up and give each other something homemade or small interesting, funny or original presents.

Do all Cypriots, who celebrate their Bayrams, believe???

I think if you have young kids it is great, but on the whole as Adults it has become a ludicrous waste of money and resources....I tend to think of the poor people in the world who through no fault of their own

have NOTHING,,,I prefer the name "Yuletide" as it tends to lean away from the religious aspects of the "Christian Doctrines"....So, Happy Yuletide to all forum members.

I love Christmas for all different reasons and I must admit not all of them have anything to do with religion.

I still hold on to my childhood days, they were the happiest and the only times I didn't have any worries - problems and worries were just for adults!!

So, 1st December every year my hubby has to put up with me spending hours dressing up the house. Although I've got to admit with the cost of electricity in here I don't bother with Christmas lights anymore. But I love that feeling of being happy. Even when you go out shopping, especially if there's a Christmas song being played in the background, everyone (well lots of other people) seems happy too and that adds to your appreciation of living in Cyprus (regardless of all the other 'adult' problems you're now faced with!). And 25th December when it's freezing, it reminds you of home!

And Vonny, how can you not believe in Jesus if you follow the Q'uran. He was a man just like Abraham, Moses, Noah, Mohamed. If you believe any of these prophets existed then whether you follow Jesus' way or not, you have to believe he was here.

I think everyone has the right to celebrate Christmas regardless of religion. For many its a break from work and a get together with family and friends. In the modern world we live in most of us have little time for that, so Christmas is special.

What thoughts are with the poor people in Van, Eastern turkey after the earthquake ? I hope their God is with them at this very "Christian" time..........To some people on this forum I say,"have a very selfish thoughtless Christmas,,,",jingle bells, jingle bells ,jingle all the way,Oh what fun it is to be fortunate on a self-indulgent day"..

Sorry if it sounds like I'm rubbing it in, David!

Daytime is not so bad, though it is of course fresher now compared to earlier in the year, it's the nighttime that's freezing - we've not all got central heating in here you know!

Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone, no matter how you intend to spend the day, or who you're thinking about.
