Probably the last book I read on paper (left)... Adding ebooks to my bookshelf (or archive them on my Mac: circa 3500 now!) day by day I now read them on my iPad 2..! As an ardent reader the iPad 2 means a big change in my life. ▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/IMG_0949_web.jpg ]. Just added some books to the bookshelf of my iPad from the archive on my Mac: ▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/IMG_0950_web.jpg ]. Read them and throw them away - they are archived on the computer so can be reread any time I wish. Love it!

Technology is brilliant but for me nothing beats the smell of a new paper book or the pleasure of settling down to read it. Getting lost in a book is a wonderful escape and the chance to switch off from the pressure of life.

@ msg 5, hattikins: I agree with your post and I'm certainly not advocating to abandon paper books - I love everything that's printed! But the new technology makes it possible (just an example) to have numerous (history) eBooks and other scanned and OCR'ed documents from my paper library on a tablet (iPad or other) and SEARCH the content and make NOTES in them wherever I am. It's just more practical.

DC I can see your point, if it's for work/research then yes, it would be more convenient, but for out and out pleasure, a glass of wine, a bar of chocolate and a good book, heavenly.

@ msg 8, hattikins: Great, we seem to agree! And wrote about our point of view in a friendly, polite way. I suggest we remain doing that. Well, at least I'll try...

@7 - If you have an iPad, can you download books from the Kindle section on amazon? As we'll be flying long haul from Australia to Istanbul then Ercan, once we sell our home, I'm looking to load up books and I'd be interested to know which is best. Thanks for any help, DC.

@ msg 10, MoBry: You can download books from all the big competitors (Apple, Amazon, Barnes and Nobles and a dozen more), but in TRNC, with its very remarkable copyright laws , it's easy to find cheap CD's with hundreds of books. I'm not suggesting you should do that - but it IS possible... Furthermore you can convert* all formats to ePub (for Ipad) or download some (often free) apps to read formats without converting anything. * Google for the free application Calibre to change any format! ** Also don't forget to download from the App Store: "Kindle" and "Stanza". *** If your iPad is jail broken the choice of downloadable apps and books is even bigger. Hope this helps!

I cant read books, i always read the same line twice, and my brain is always thinking of to many other things, but when i watch a flim the visual aspect can make me concentrate. Why cant you buy adult stories on line which are read to you, like the kids stories on tape you had as a kid, but for adults. You could sit there in the sun with your head phones on with no strain on your eyes.

I'm forming a new company called the ADULT AUDIO APP, It will be an app where you can have all the latest and best novels read to you in a selection of different voices male and female and different languages. Watch this space.

@ msg 14, ss: We don't have to watch this space, because Apple doesn't deal with any "Adult audio app". Why would they? Male and female voices, reading any text in many different languages, are already a built-in facility of the Apple Macintosh Operating System. Since a long time. Nice try though.

Thanks very much for the info in 11 & 13, DC. Sorry about the delay in getting back, time differences make things a bit difficult. I had a look at the links and my eyes are still whirling! I don't have a netbook of any kind at present, so I think I'll go for a kindle then sort things out when we get to NC (whenever that may be), sometimes it's better to buy in the country and have stuff equipped for those conditions rather than buy early then perhaps have difficulty setting up. I'm not too techie with the installation guff, so I'll stick to safe and sound and the basics until we actually arrive. Very useful information though, terrific!
