Like you Turtle I have been a resident here for nearly 50 years but was born on Tyneside, then moved into Durham just as the war finished. We came to the Potteries when the mines started closing and my father was offered his own house to come and work in the pits down here.

"me duck" is Derbyshire "arry. They only say "duck " in the potteries probably originated in the pottery factories when some one started hurling cups and saucers at one another ....

Turtle,

Had duck for my dinner this evening. I always find the feathers stick in my throat!

Us Northerners can forgive Coachie for his geography, but never his politics.

He has much to defend in Honest Gordon, the punters friend. "Bet I can run up more debt,

than you can"....... Oh! have you got the phone number of the IMF?

To be debated!

I was pulled up the other day for calling someone a "berk". I was told it was an extremely crude and offensive swear word.

Nonplussed, I asked why.

I was told it derives from Cockney rhyming slang for Berkshire Hunt.

Now superceded in modern times by a right James Blunt.

As a Birmingham Gal, I can confirm Stoke is "up North", well it was the last time I went there on the M6 signposted "M6 North Stoke on Trent".

It's North believe me.

Bimingham IS the Midlands.

Kay,

Birmingham is the West Midlands, Stoke is the East midlands which to me is The Midlands.

Draw a line on a map from Bangor to Boston and anything above the line is North the rest is South.

Which means..................sorry Kay your a southerner

A bit harsh that is Bill. Go a little bit further up .Say Watford that'll do .

I don't understand people not being proud of their roots !.I'ma Londoner

and proud of it . I still talk the same as i did forty years ago , and more .

I can understand people having to " modify " their accent ,due to your job ,but

in my opinion you've got what you've been given why change it.Regional

accents are great. Keep em !!

No1.. A bit like Columbus you folk from the south. You will not fall off the end of the world,it is not flat ,and Watford Gap isnt the edge, there again having been in there on numerous occasions it could well be the end of the world...

turtle..you dont same as you dont seeit with East mids. Its justb a geographical term now that we all use post codes. If you remember years ago it used to be N. Staffs..South Staffs. But it was all changed when the electoral boundaries were changed.WestMIdlands is not a county it is an area which incorporates N.Staffs. S. staffs, some of Warwickshire and a tiny bit of Leics...

Kay and Turtle..West Midlands as been a Metropiltan Boroughsince 1974,so I bow to you superior knowledge on the subject.I am affraid Walsall is not part of the area Kaycomes under Staffordshire.I was surprised to note that Wolverhampton comes under the West Midlands. If I can remember there were 8 towns that made up the said area, something similar to the 5towns that make up Stoke-on-Trent...
