Rob

I am ashamed at myself for not knowing what blood group I am but I am more than willing to go to the hospital tomorrow to see if I can help Roy. And I am sure a lot of members of 44 will be willing to do likewise.

Come on girls and guys Roy needs your help.

Rob I will contact you by phone in a few minutes.

It is now possible to give blood at Girne hospital, they are open between 8.30am and 12, they will then arrange for transportation on blood to whichever possible it is needed.

You must leave three months between donations.

I hold the BRS blood donors database, so if you need units of blood, please contact me and advise how many. 0533 866 2758

Most people can give blood. If you are generally in good heath, age 17 to 65 (if it’s your first time) and weigh at least 7st 12Ib you can donate.

Not sure if this still applies but if the bloodbank has enough of the group needed they will release this for the person needing it on the understanding that there are the same amount of units to replace it. (of any group)

Hippo - the blood donated at the donor days goes to the Lefkosa blood bank to be used for anyone who needs emergency surgery or for thalassimia patients - who require 9000 units of blood a year.

The blood only has a shelf life of 30 days. Anyone requiring elective surgery should arrange to have people donate prior to surgery the number of units they will need, ideally those having emergency surgery should arrange for people to donate on their behalf later, to replace what was used, however, it doesn't necessarily the same blood group.

martinD41 - Hope Roy is recovering well

A question for martinD41 (I don't have an email address), who started this thread.

How did you collect the needed blood donors? 1: Did you do it yourself (via this thread), 2: did the BRS Blood Donors Bank arrange it?, or 3: ........?

I ask because when a year or two ago Nurseawful collected the potential donors and I maintained the emergency database - we could arrange 5 or 6 potential donors within a couple of minutes.

If finding blood donors is a problem (again) we may consider to revive our (Chris Offord's and mine) system.

DC , I simply posted at the request of Roy's Wife,.... The "kind people" who were able to help came forward .. I also E-mailed Chris and she was most helpful....I only know two of the donors, the others are anonymous..

If the gathering of Blood was a result of your (successful) system then thank you..

@ martinD41: I am not after thanks, Rob. I only became worried when I read that your blood donor request took imo too long and too much work to solve.

What I mentioned in msg 59 was as follows - and it worked extremely well:

1: Potential blood donors answered some questions and emailed Nurseawful.

2: I put the (medical) answers in a database.

3: Nurseawful called me if a certain blood type was needed.

4: I sent out a text message from the database (in bulk, to the donors with the right type of blood).

5: Available blood donors called or texted Nurseawful for detailed information about when and where.

▶ Again: If finding blood donors is a problem (again) we may consider to revive our (Chris Offord's and mine) system.

I hope(d) the last line may people think and react. As we said at the time: "It could be you...".

A previous message did say that the BRS maintains a data base of blood donors, and gave the phone number. This base encorporates Nurse Awfuls base, which was kindly given to BRS. ANYONE can ring and ask for help getting EMERGENCY blood - eg blood they are not carrying at the time, or rare type, for an emergency op etc. These donors can now give at the new Girne hospital Blood Bank instead of travelling to Lefkosa, and Girne sees to the correct and quick transportation of it to the appropriate place. This will make it a lot easier for local donors to give quickly and not have to take time off work, for instance, for too long, or for others to find transportation etc. So back track and put the number in your diary, you never know.

I now assume that the the BRS blood contact data base is open to non-members.

The blood donor days organised by the BRS at different locations in and around the Girne area are, I assume, for the benefit of all residence of the TRNC irrespective of ethnic background and for no personal financial gain but used as and when required for those in need.

Therefore, it is an enigma to me why when 'aliens' needing a life saving operation, the hospitals ask family/friends to find the exact quantity of blood needed before proceeding with the said surgery!

I wish it was not necessary that such posts pleading for blood donors were needed.

Kia Ora Roy, get well quickly.
