If your boss told you that your accent was too much .

Would you change it, put non a "telephone " voice.

Would you tell him where to put his job ?

Would you give up your roots ??

My accent is too much, particulary the American's had a hard time with understanding when we were over their. It's a good job we don't write as we speak!

If your boss told you that your accent was too much .( Yes he did say that )

Would you change it, put non a "telephone " voice. ( i did try )

Would you tell him where to put his job ?( no it paid very well )

Would you give up your roots ?? ( would gladly give up the grey ones )

When I worked in Altincham My thick accent led me into difficulties so I had to learn to speak in a precise way it took about 6 months to get the hang of it but paid off very well.

Why do Americans always think Londoners are Australian? Well, those of us who speak with "Estuary" type accents?

I have worked all over the country and without noticing over the years my Sheffield accent has neutralised, people do somtimes pick up on certain words.

The worst thing is lots of people think I come from Lancashire.................what a terrible thing to say to a Yorkshireman

My daughter was born in Scotland and had quite broad accent that lasted all of 6 weeks exposure to the south of England, aged four years old...

I think dialects are great, and it's only the uneducated that would make comments about it, particularly if you were good at your job.

We can't all speak BBC English like what I do!!!

We lived in Hampshire for 8years and my two eldest daughters were born there and were 7 and 8 yrs old when we came back to the Potteries.I can still remember the eldest one coming home after her first day at school and saying to me " daddy I cannot understand what they are saying to me" to which I tried to explain about dialects. She listened to me trying to explain in my semi -geordie accent and then suddenly said " They all say I must be posh because of the way I speak" and I replied "dont worry you will soon be speaking like them" She now has the broadest potteries accent after35 years...

My Mum (who grew up in Birmingham in the poorest of families and conditions) always has, and still does, speak without an accent. In fact as I said previously she was "the Mrs Bucket" and I'm sure that woman is modelled on her. LOL.

As a consequence, we didn't speak with an accent. No falseness. No telephone voices. That's just the way it was when we were growing up. We were constantly corrected on speaking properly, and good manners.

I worked in Walsall for a short period of my life, and had to get a secretary to translate a client's instructions to me because I could not understand a word she was saying.

I get REALLY worried now that I can understand the Cannock dialect, which is even broader. Just what you get used to I suppose.

Now I really must go and polish my tiara! LOL

I'm an Essex girl but born in East London and lived there until I was 9. I'm proud of where I'm from and wouldn't change it for the world but my friends used to say I had a "telephone voice" when I answered the phone at work! Adapt to the circumstances, it's never held me back.

None as far as I know. It's called roots, and does it really matter where you are from, and in what accent you speak, if you are a good person IMHO.

Exactly babe !!

If you went along to the audition for a news reader with a broad brummie

accent ...it would be "thankyou very much we will let you know "....

I love regional accents !

But how many celebs etc have retained their natural accents ??

Obviously in your line of work ,you may have to talk, lets say properly !!

But if you had a blatant accent would you be willing to talk proper ?

Big companies do not care about things like that you might be the

best person in the world but .....you don't speak the way they want you

to ! Would you then give up your roots to keep your job ???

i think the british accent is great. as for me being from the US and living in Texas you should be glad you don't have to listen to our Texas accent all day. you would laugh. when i call an other place in the US they state how funny we sound and then followed by you texans sound so cute. like if we are some type of entertainment. But alway proud in being a Texan.

If only George W. Bush didn't come from there.....

Oh, I know he was born in New Haven Ct but they soon realised what a liability he was and moved him on to Midland and Houston...

He's blackened the reputation of the Yellow Rose... still I suppose it could have been worse... he could have been English..

Groucho,

Being from Texas and having Georgie Boy in my back yard now is not very good. He just bought a house here in the Dallas area. I'm glad to see someone can still buy a house.HA!HA! as for us the true poor texans we hope we will be able to buy food in the next coming months. Sorry but our dear Bush has made a big mess for everyone.
