We have a 2 meg connection, which is Ok if directly connected but once we go wireless thro' the router it drops to 1.25meg even when very close to the router. Anyone have the same problem and does anyone have any ideas of what we can do to get closer to the 2meg thro' the router ?

could be that the router is configured to provide a fixed amount of speed, such configurations improve the quality of signal on a router. you could try resetting the router, there is usually (on most makes) either a reset button at the back of the router or a hole which you can stick a pin in to reset the router. either way hold down the reset button (or hole) for about 30 seconds. it might solve your problem, might not. either way if u do reset the router you will lose any security settings you have on the router and they will have to be done again.

Hello Tony, here are a few suggestions out of experience.

1. First, you need to find out if it is the router or the laptop that causes this problem. The simplest way is to get a hold of another laptop and check if that one has the same problem.

a. If the second laptop has the same problem, that it may be that your router is i) misconfigured ii) faulty. You need to take it to someone who can take a look at it and determine which one it is.

b. If the second laptop works ok, it may be that the wireless chipset on your laptop is i) not so compatible ii) faulty iii) not properly installed iv) some software conflict is affecting its performance. You need to take it to someone who can take a look at it and determine which one it is.

2. You should understand that bringining the laptop next to the router is not really that good idea. Having too strong signal is like shouting someones ear and may have detrimental effect on the wireless performance. (cont)

We had a few instances where too strong signal was the actual cause of the problem, and we solved those particular problems by removing the antenna at the back of the router.

3. This one is more like a question. Did you ever had this setup working at 2Megs before? If it has never worked before, it is more likely be a configuration issue. If you had this working before no problem and it suddently started working sub-par performance, I would guess it is either something that happened with the laptop (something installed, modified) or something broke down.

Overall, we are having some customers having issues with pushing 10megs through their outdated wireless routers or laptops, but 2megs should be no problem even with the oldest of models.
