Nobody knows how many times St Hilarion castle has been photographed by an unknown number of people from almost all sides - but not from the side on my picture!

I've just been told that the word "awul" on the picture may not express what I meant.

So here's the caption as it should be read.

"Attack on St Hilarion..?! No way! The well respected Turkish Army shows its capabilities for onlooking expats in TRNC!"

To avoid any misunderstanding: I have replaced the first caption on the picture - it now says what I meant from the start.

@ msg 4, Groucho: (...) Is photography not outlawed from this spot? (...)

▶ No, we were guests of the Turkish Army and could photograph quite openly what we wanted.

I was always under the impression that Hilarion Castle was held by the Turks against the Greeks. There are lots of photos at the castle which appear to substantiate this.

St Hilarion Castle had always been a TC stronghold eversince the 1963 troubles had started. The Greek National guard made several attempts to capture it between 1963-67 to no avail. Those who have been up there would understand why - a very strategically positioned castle, that would demand a very high casualty rate from any attacking enemy.

The TC sector extending as a narrow strip from the enclave in N. Lefkoşa to Gönyeli and up to the peak of the Lefkoşa - Girne road at Boğaz. The green line was where the road turned off up the mountains, towards the castle. After 1968 GCs used to travel to Girne from Lefkoşa and back during weekends, by gathering around the Metehan area, accompanied by the UN trucks as security.
