I know there have been a lot of posts about the Kindle but as far as I can tell, none of them have answered my question. I'm really interested in buying a Kindle but I'm not sure it would work here. On Amazon, a lot of books say "This title is available to UK customers only" with no price. I've been using amazon for years and my address is in Cyprus, as is my credit card information. Does anyone know if I can get around this? If not, it's not worth buying the Kindle at all. Any other recommendations for ereaders where there are no limitations to the books you can buy? Thank you!

It's a UK card but also registered to my TRNC address so this shouldn't make any difference at all.

I think that's what makes the difference because I've had plenty of my Amazon packages sent to a UK address rather than Cyprus but I still don't qualify as a UK customer. Thank you!

Gpztop, I too have some problems with Amazon. I am registered with them from my UK address, but the accounts department sent me an email saying it appeared I was not living in the UK and that some books were not available to non UK residents. They must have picked this up from my ISP address. They went on to ask for proof of identity eg passport, driving licence or military id. (I don`t think so Amazon} I am going to try ordering more books and see what happens, but all is not straight forward.

Do what my wife does, buy the books on Ebay, arrive on DVD, load onto laptop and drag and drop onto Kindle or use free Calibre Ebook software. Bought nearly 9000 books last week on 4 DVDs for less than a tenner, some good authors too. Mike.

I don't read them, my wife is an avid reader, sometimes two to three books a day, books on DVD's already in kindle format, she bought 8000 on two dvd's (romance) 92 James Patterson on another and 300 New York Best sellers on another, less than a tenner for the lot. Took around ten minutes to load 200 to her kindle and saves a fortune not having to pay Amazon for something that you do not even own. If you want a link to the seller on Ebay let me know. Mike.

"9000 books on 4 DVDs ! I find that hard to believe" Why is it hard to believe? A DVD (bog standard) can hold over 4GB of data... books are very compact.

I have no problems with my kindle. I have a VPN to the UK on my computer so I order them on that and then turn the wifi on my kindle on and it downloads it automatically. Never had a problem. SteveAustin, you could also use the newsgroups on the internet, I have downloaded loads of ebooks over the years. I suppose for the price you've mentioned it's more convenient buying a load on DVD ;-)

Message 18: this is odd. I also have a UK VPN but have no need to use it for downloading books on my Kindle because there has never been a problem. Downloading music is another matter, for this I do have to use my UK VPN.

LaptaMike: Can you please explain how this works. If you have a VPN, can you access everything as if you're in that country then? If so, what about addresses? Does having a Cyprus address affect what you can view? Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm a bit clueless when it comes to these things! Thanks. Ranger5: Were you able to solve your problem with your Kindle?

just go into torrentz.com or The Pirate Bay, and download as many books as you want and use bitcomet to download them to your hard drive, use calibre ( free to Download ) to convert them to MOBI format, you will find that a lot of books are in EPUB format, sounds hard but you would get the hang of it very quickly, and each book is around 1.5meg, so a thousand meg = 1 Gig, so you should get around 3.000 books on each DVD. you get John Grisham, Tom Clancy, JD Robb, Nora Roberts, James Patterson, the list just goes on. any book that you can think of, Robert

msg28, when you connect to a vpn the rest of the world thinks your in the country where the vpn is so if you use a UK vpn you can watch British tv for example. Using a Cypriot billing address is another matter entirely. With amazon.co.uk you 'may' be able to register a Cypriot card to an account but I don't know because I've never tried. Sorry I can't be of more help on that point.

Goztop My wife and i both have kindles registered to a Uk address with amazon, and TRNC ISP. We have no trouble downloading books from amazon (with TRNC credit card). If you have a 3G version you can dowload anywhere in the world (as advertised). I have also tried Aussiejock's method - there are lots of good authors available. As he says - get 'Calibre' and you can convert different formats relatively easy.

Goztop - msge 28. Amazon.co.uk would not let me download any more books, so I contacted their helpline. They told me that amazon.co.uk is not allowed by law to sell books to people not resident in the uk, but suggested I could use amazon.com. When I said I registered my kindle at my uk address and pay for any books from my uk bank a/c she said she would remove the bar to allow me to download 5 more books and in the meantime would refer my situation to her boss. So it looks like I will have to take advantage of the other options available

The Wildebeest (bless her) wants a Kindle amongst other things for Christmas but I have "cocked a deaf'un" and will try and make out that I thought she said "a cuddle" ! Actually, I have bought her one and it is hidden in UK and not available to her until Jan 12 next.
