Hope they don't come to us because we have to go miles to put our rubbish in a bin, no road, only street lighting. I agree with Jock 1 why tip for services you do not receive.

Well said ttolli and vonny The dustbinmen turned up for a seasonal tip it seemed five minutes after I moved in and was in a state of chaos! It amused me rather than anything else - just like being back in England!! I tipped them (but not a lot!) and have been doing so ever since - and, unlike England, the same men. I have never had the problems with rubbish collection (and sometimes awkward items) , again unlike England. These are just workmen and poorly paid. They are not responsible for the decisions , actions and omissions of the authorities or developers. They do an unpleasant job in unpleasant conditions (the same people had to deal with the cull during the bird flue epidemic) reasonably cheerfully.

The collection service is spot on ...twice a week in Lapta! (unheard of back in the UK) And collecting bottles from some 'Brits' must be more challenging than from others!

If my binmen come a'calling they will leave with a flea in their ear. To date they have broken the lids on two of my bins, leave my bin in the middle of the road and frequently leave the road littered with...........litter. Bah Humbug ..... And before you ask, no I am not a 'Sweaty' Paul

I think the point is missed here. It's not so much about tipping workers, as this is acceptable practice, no matter where in the world you live. It's the fact that they "knock on the door in expectation" rather than leave judgment to the householder. This, in my opinion, is not appropriate and is simply rude, intrusive and for some elderly may be seen as intimidating. Poor manners in my book and certainly unacceptable practice.

@ msg 14, riddles: (...) The collection service is spot on ...twice a week in Lapta! (unheard of back in the UK) (...) ▶ The collection service is spot on ...twice a week in Yeşiltepe! (Unheard of back in Holland). Even irregular 'things' are taken - not one problem ever. Not one reason not to tip these binmen, who didn't let us down in almost eight years. Thank you, Alsancak binmen, for doing this ungrateful job in the early morning hours.

Bradus i strongly agree...imagine a waiter or waitress asking for a tip...i think its way over the top to knock in anyone's door asking for a tip especially as they are getting paid for there job Dc if you want to tip the binmen by all accounts go ahead its up to the individual...but this is taking it to the extreme...cmon its taking the p*** i think the next bayram i will knock on my all my neighbours doors and ask for money !!!

I dont get a bin collection now but in Karsiyaka the dustmen deserved it, they would take all the garden rubbish and were always polite. I give the lady in Lapta post office chocs every Christmas, it ensures my mail makes it into my postbox and she is very pleasant.

That is actually a good point Bradus. It illustrates the difference between here and the UK. In the UK I would be nervous about opening the door to strange men if I was on my own . Here I know the men concerned, know their boss if ever there were problems, and know that neighbours are aware of what goes on. Please dont spoil the secururity this involves by insulting them. Anyway how else would they get tips? Is anyone likely to get up in the early hours to catch them (and they usually come and go pretty quickly) to wish them ' Yeni Yılınız Kutlu Olsun' and give them a tip? Though come to think of it how do the dustmen in the UK get tips? I seem to remember they did knock on the door, but it was a long time ago and my memory may be at fault. What I have heard is that in the UK they wont collect at all unless you take your bin(s) to the exact spot, no matter how heavy or how far, or how elderly, ill or disabled you may be.

The whole point is asking for a tip its not on !!!! So,if you knew some one who knew someone and told you a horse to back - a tip - you would ignore it. post 20 - last statement exactly correct. Also, if any (extra i.e. bags are left at the side) you have no chance. Bin and nothing else.

My point does not illustrate the difference between the TRNC and the UK BizzieLizzie, it shows the difference in it's peoples. Obviously some must think it is their God Given Right to get a tip whilst others think it should be at the discretion of the home-owner. For several years my son had a paper round and often got tips from his customers at Christmas but if I had found out he had been knocking on their doors and asking for tips, I would have felt embarrassed and ashamed. Luckily although young he would never have done such a thing. I'm with Jock on this and whether it is done in the UK or TRNC it is not acceptable behaviour. By the way,I have excellent bin man and they certainly deserved their tip.

Any country, anywhere, nobody should not be asking for tip. It is for the customer to give as they feel and that depends on how their service has been. We have always given generously, if deserved.

Jock1. I totally understand your justifiable reaction. Before the days of multi coloured bins in UK I placed what must have amounted to a couple of cups of grass cuttings into a bin enclosed in a plastic shopping bag. It had earlier rained when I had emptied the lawnmower basket onto the compost heap so I cleaned the lawnmower in the garage, hence the small amount of cuttings in the bin. The next morning at the end of the road where I had carried the bin to for collection I found a pile of burst plastic bags and rubbish on the footpath emptied from my dustbin which bore a red printed label marked "garden waste is not an item for which the council have responsibility to dispose of" The next time I put the bin out I left it with their notice on but added with sellotape a small cardboard package marked "for your Xmas box". Within was a part used tube of hemorroid cream.

I had a muslim woman knock at my door. I talked to her through the letterbox to let her know how it feels. I always tip the binmen here, because they deserve it, not just because they knock, mind you living on the top floor they don't actually knock. T ps yeah, the muslim woman didn't knock either. Someone made that up.
