Amazing?

A bl**dy shame.

On (my club) Ajax. For allowing entrance to a drunk and known hooligan (officially not allowed to be in stadium at all!).

However, the referee was right presenting his red card to AZ goalkeeper Esteban. He HAD to. Rules. Wrong, but 'the Rules'.

Result.

Ajax may be punished with a 0-3 loss and some matches without people in the stadium.

Or.

AZ may be punished with a 0-3 loss because the team left the field.

Goalkeeper Esteban may be punished for kicking (more than one time): one or more matches.

And the scum who caused this problem? Punishment? A laugh.

Wasn't it a Brit who said: "Football is a game for gentlemen, but unfortunately it's played by hoodlums".

We (certainly in Holland) can now add that football is too often watched by scum.

What a shame.

6 pm local time, on Dutch radio: the red card for AZ goalkeeper Esteban has been withdrawn by the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association). Although the referee was right, says KNVB.

Well done.

Its not as clear cut as that.........

The Dutch goalkeeper would be in the clear if he had not retaliated in such an aggressive manner and has now left himself open for a charge of assault by the fan. The police could (but probably wont) also charge the goalkeeper with assault as he did not react purely in self defence.

I can see another nice pay day for the lawyers.

DC - give the 'fan' (sic) to the AZ crowd for their opinion of just reward. The GK should be lauded for presenting to hooligans their likely outcome on pitch invasions occurring assault on players/officials.

Msg 4

Extensive research by Sean Fagen has concluded that the original quote (referring to RU and football but not specifying) was -

"..one is a gentleman's game played by hooligans; the other a hooligan's game played by gentlemen..." and is attributed to an unknown Chancellor of Cambridge University.

Sorry to be pedantic Hans, but as it's you, There are no "rules" in Association Football (soccer)

The game is governed by laws. Have a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

I think the goal keeper was justified. The person/ supporter attacking him could have been any type of nutter how did he know. ? He just defended himself like anyone else would have done when confronted by the unknown.

I still think this will end up with the Goalkeeper ending up in court facing a charge of assault.

If hes really unlucky he could be sharing the same cell with John Terry.

Riddles, I think it's rugby league that is referred to as the "hooligans' game played by hooligans"...

The reversal of the red card was, IMO, the correct result, as was the jailing of the pitch invader, but as an Australian I'd be culturally prohibited from kicking a man when he's down. The world-wide publicity of the occurrence will hopefully draw attention to his actions, which were, again IMO, unimpressive.

blade Msg 12 No doubt the goalies first kick could be deemed as an act of self defence but not the subsequent kicks.

A sad spectacle in the name of sport. What's more in my view, made much worse, is that young people who are interested in football regard the footballing stars as heroes and see their heroes conduct as normal and copy it.

The goalie should be disciplined in such a fashion that sends out a message to all players and spectators alike, that this type of conduct in sport will not be tolerated.

As for the manager leading his team off the park in protest to the referees decision, he should join the ranks of the unemployed.

It brought a whole new meaning to "penalty kick in the box" ! The fan(?) is lucky that he did not also get a "blow job" off the referee for being behind the goalkeeper and in an offside position.
