it was bad enough in Crete in June this year when they held a protest outside our hotel nr Chania.Apparently they were unhappy about the government saying they had to pay for there University fees, and as it happened the Education Minister and his cronies were staying there. It got nasty after one of the protesters hurled a brick at the riot police and all hell broke loose.Tear gas ,water cannon dogs you name itthe police had it.I am not surprised at what has happened inAthens after a youth was shot dead for throwing stones at a police car.Two police officers have been arrested for the shooting...

Evening news says the rioting is getting worse in Athens and other cities and looters armed with baseball bats are controlling several city centers.

Nothing new in Greece, dear Brits. 2500 years ago they only lacked bombs and baseball bats. The riots in and between the Greek city-states like Sparta, Athens etc are well documented. Tip: read Nietzsche about Euripides.

article in yesterdays paper

The smouldering centre of Athens yesterday provided the latest evidence of a propensity to political violence tht has charchterised the Greeks since Homeric times.

Watching the hooded hordes setting light to public buildings. It was hard not to to agree with Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, who wrote famously that the "Greeks, the most humane men of ancient times, have a trait of cruelty, a tigerish lust to annihilate....that must strike fear in to our hearts throughout their whole history and mythology"

Ironically, it is this consciousness of having been once a great civilisation that lingers in the public mind and erupts in paroysms of frustration. The fatal shooting of a teenager merely provided the spark for the latest outbreak. ever since independence in 1829, the Greeks have been torn between trying to recreate the glories of classical Athens and having to accept a minor position in a Western-dominated world.

You only need to read the anti-Turkish and other racist vitriol on the Greek dominated boards to know why troubles lie ahead... they have a football hooligan mentality for all to see...

They have a love - hate relationship with the West; a slavish adherence to Western music, films and fashions, offset by a hatred of Western policies.

The trait of tsambouka - a hooliganish readiness to fight - has been valued in the Greek male world for 3,000 years. Perhaps it was no accident that last month, when a newspaper offered free copies of the film 300, about the bloody battle of Thermopylae, the issue was sold out in less than two hours

ILC, maybe youre thinking of the "other" version..."meet the Spartans"

there is a really fun game involved at this site, you can make your self a spartan or the queen warrior or slave girl etc. and send it to all. A LOT OF FUN.

http://www.meetthespartansdvd.com/ (then got to Spartanize yourself) enjoy.

I know i have started another thread regarding these riots...but they are turning out to be quite serious.

If they persist and even get worse, how does this effect Greece's Euro membership?

Surly a country that has lost control of its people, fails to comply with EU membership.

A GROUP of around 100 hooded demonstrators wrought havoc at the centre of Limassol on Wednesday night, as what started as a peaceful demonstration escalated into a stoning of Limassol Police headquarters.

A group of youths gathered at Grigori Afexendiou Square on Anexartisias Street on Wednesday night and started passing out leaflets condemning police violence and referring to the shooting of a 15-year-old boy by a police officer in Greece. Although the demonstration was initially peaceful, it caught the attention of local authorities and police......

The demonstrators headed to police headquarters, where they started swearing at officers, throwing stones and pieces of wood. The group also used red paint to write slogans all over state buildings along Gladstone street.

Fresh riots hit Greek capital

Hundreds of youths have once more brought parts of central Athens to a standstill amid violent clashes with riot police which lasted into the night.

Demonstrators charged at riot police outside parliament, throwing fire bombs. Police responded with volleys of tear gas.

And they have the gaul to call Turks the Barbarians!

Read your history. This is against a democratically elected

government.
