Could be Karen Carpenter, such a pure voice, but everyone will come up with some one new & I know I'll say oh yes their good as well. I've already thought of another three as I'm typing this.

Mrs Wick actually thinks Maria Callas is one of the greatest female singers - Barbra Streisand takes some beating, though.

Maria Callas and Barbara Streisand - two completely different singers, each great in there own way.

There were and are some great female singers, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and our own Leona Lewis to name but a few. What about Deanna Durbin she had a great voice.

No1Doyen - agree, but aren't we giving our ages away here just by admitting we remember Deanna Durbin? I'm OLD.

Tonni - apart from the terrible "My Boy Lollipop" (which, I must admit I loved as a young teenager - the follies of youth) did she actually make any other records?

mikelapta - Katherine Jenkins has a "nice" voice - nothing more in my opinion. I wonder whether you have considered that a lot of her success may be due to the fact that she is very easy on the eye and has a lovely figure?

Incidentally - first record I ever bought - "Tell Laura I Love Her" YUCK!!

Sweet William and Bloodahot Eyes.

Ni i was not a fan but just looked it up in the Guiness Book of Hit Singles out of curiosity. I thought she was bloody awful.

All time best has to be Hilda Baker (with Arthur Mullard) singing You're The One That I Want. Now that girl could ROCK AAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH

Since I like rock music. There is only 1 for me.

The lovely Annie Lennox.

Apart from having the purist voice. She is an inspiration with her tireless humanitarian work. She is a fantastic musician, playing the piano and flute.

She also won an oscar for her songwriting.

A brilliant lady and a beautiful person

Jo

My brother Simon went to school with Alison Goldfrapp... he asked her out too.

I vote

Eva Cassidy for modern Jazz/Blues with a bit of Country influence... Listen to her version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' and 'Fields of Gold'

Janis Joplin for rock

Arlene Auger for Classical/Opera...

Edit Piaf for being French... La Vie En Rose etc. changed the music scene.

Do not believe Hilltop - Buffy St Marie.

You have gone up in my estimations 100 fold.

Tonni - Francois Ardy!!! What a gem.

I forgot another gem that died so young - Sandy Denny ( Fairport Convention et al ). Saw the group with Sandy live at Redcar Coatham Hotel - 1968, brilliant.

Another couple of under rated from that era - Jaquie Mcshay (Pentangle) and Maddy Prior ( all sorts).

Nina Simone,, Four Women(one of her best was banned in 1966),

I was lucky enough to see her in concert in LA in 2001-2 she passed away April 2003 aged 70.

You are both so right, how could I have forgotten to mention Dusty, the best English singer of all time.

Does anyone remember Maggie Bell from Stone The Crows ( with Alex Harvey's brother on guitar who got electrocuted on stage and died). She had a great voice for Blues /Rock.

Also remember seeing Elkie Brookes with Vinegar Joe together with Robert

Palmer. Elkie used to come on stage in Basque and stockings!!!!! Very raunchy

Gibson you've just reminded me about Maggie Bell - I've got a solo album of hers gathering dust somewhere- I'm going to dig it out tonight. Wasn't she Jimmy Logan's sister?

Gibson- I saw Vinegar Joe in 1973, Elkis brook wore a sort of leather mini skirt without sides. They were on the same bill as Al Stewart & Wishbone Ash.

I liked Iain Cuthbertson as Charlie Endell in Budgie but never took to Adam Faith as I hated his clothes for some odd reason

1. Which "Likely Lad" appeared in Budgie and what was the name of his

character?

2. Name the actor who played a Detective Constable on several episodes of Budgie who later became a Detective Superintendent with his own TV series.
