Watching the 'live' firework display on BBC World News from Sydney Harbour Bridge on the turn of their New Year, spectacular as it was, a running 'tic-a tape' bottom of the TV screen kept on informing all viewers that the display cost more than £4 million for the 12 minute show with 1.5 million people in person watching. Australia can afford it!

Eleven hours later London responds, and not to be out done by 'Down-Under' puts on a 11 minute performance, an even better show but only viewed 'live in person' by 500,000 people and no showing of what the cost was! Britain is bust!!!

Msg.4 We were reliabily informed (!!!) that Girne fireworks had been cancelled because of the rain. Certainly we stood on someones terrace where we have seen them in other years and waited until 12.10 - no sign of fireworks. When did they let them off?
