What happened to charity starts at home? How many charities can you give to per week? What is your favourite charity in north cyprus? Do you give to any charity in other parts of the world? Have you stopped giving to charity recently? Do you think all charities in north cyprus are run legit? Which charity would you not donate to in north cyprus or other country and why? Honest replies only please. |

My honest reply is that I can't answer all those questions, but to quote St.Paul 'without charity, I am nothing!'. And to show off for being a clever clogs, the word for 'charity' in the original Greek is 'agape' and that means 'love'. so, as the \Beatles said 'all you need is love', so it must follow that we need 'charity'. and of course, being totally selfish, I might need it some day, so I hope others keep on giving! What do others think.

Why do you want to know. Surely giving to charity or helping is a personal thing... is this a survey?

What are your thoughts on charity in north cyprus? Is there to much charity? Yes and No, there should not be a need for so much charity if goverment's helped more and were less corrupt, but as this is not the case in most countries, thank God there are charities around to help those less fortunate. Are you tired of collections every where you go? It depends on what the charity is What happened to charity starts at home? I agree to a certain extent but what kind of people would we be if we just thought of ourselves and not people less fortunate How many charities can you give to per week? That is an open ended question depending on peoples circumstances What is your favourite charity in north cyprus? Again, I think this is personnel to each individual Do you give to any charity in other parts of the world? No, only here at present Have you stopped giving to charity recently? No

Do you think all charities in north cyprus are run legit? Most are, but unfortunately again like most countries you have some that are not. Most Charities that are legal should be able to show their yearly accounts which are available for the general public to see. This way you have total transparency and you can see where every penny gets spent. Which charity would you not donate to in north cyprus or other country and why? Again I think this is personnel to individuals and to what is important to them. As some of you know I work for Children in Need Foundation, and yes selfishly it makes me feel good that I can make a difference, I do feel myself and my family are in a fortunate position and in turn it feels good to give something back, saying that I also support many other worthwhile causes out here too.

Charity: Well firstly yes it belongs at home, so i would always help out people close to me or in my village first. Feed the village dogs, help the local people that sort of stuff. I bred Shar Pei dogs for years and i always feel breeders should put something back in, hence i always give to breed charities and Shar Pei rescue in the UK. Then in the TRNC i would only give to registered legal charities. To much fund raising and to little accounting for it. I also pay in to fund the village football team. So charity can come in many forms.

As far as the UK goes ..... There are far too many 'charities'. A great number are very worthy but attempt to provide services that we already pay for through taxes, thus allowing central government to cut back financially on those services. Good examples would be cancer and heart research charities, both extremely worthy but doing work that the government should be FULLY funding. At the other end of the scale there are numerous 'charities' where the management are extremely well paid and the end benefit provided seems difficult if not impossible to measure. Pretty much any organisation can be a legal charity these days, dramatically blurring the line between real charities with a genuine desire to improve life in some way and those that exist solely as money making machines or, in many cases, as a means of tax avoidance. My personal opinion is that the whole legal system around what does and doesn't constitute a charity badly needs overhauled.

I think charity should begin at home in that one should know something about what the charity is doing, and how it goes about it rather than just giving to something that sounds good and makes us feel good. Many people will give to a Charity that has helped them or their loved ones, so they know it does good, but it neednt be so close - in the UK I shared an office with a blind lady and her guide dog, and , since she was not very active, also helped to excercise the dog, so I know how much independence these wonderful dogs can give visually impaired people, and the effort that goes into selecting and training them. One of the things about charities here is that they are often small operations (as opposed to the large organisaitons occupying expensive office sites and employing well paid professional staff in more "developed" countries ) run o a shoe string by volunteers so if you are in doubt where to give your hard earned cash why not speak to the volunteers and ask to see round

and ask questions - if they are committed they will welcome your interest. Better still volunteer your services - then you will be able to judge for yourself if it is a worthwhile operation. Putting spare change into a collection box or paying a high price for an evening out will of course jprovide welcome funds, but I have a nasty suspicion that true charity involves a certain amount of self-sacrifice. Also try to spare some time/money for the less high profile charities. Animals and children have an immediate appeal to the heartstrings but support and help for the elderly/disabled, terminally ill is also vital to "susidize" the limited facilities provided by th state either here or the UK
