Take a look at Wikipedia, Turkish and TRNC military service. My TC husband says, children born abroad to Turkish/Turkish Cypriot parents are automatically classed as Turkish/ Turkish Cypriots, if they wish to remain in the TRNC for more than 90 days, then they are liable for military service. They can however, pay to be exempt.

it's all been changed to softer regulations, but not sure off my head to what right now.

Ejder Aslanbaba (ubp mp) has been fighting to change this for years, though he is not the minister.

thanks yorguzlu - it is a very good thing for the future it is so unfair thats tc children have to pay such money to stay in their father"s country more than 3 months - it would be very positive to make them to come and stay

yes and no -

yes, if you want to stay more than 3 months in KKTC (maybe you already are)

no, if you pay for it -the answer is in the link yorguzlu sent me down your post -

your child can obtain the cypriot nationality because you TC gave birth even if your husband is english and your child born in uk - if he wants to live in KKTC it will be more simple if not he will only be able to stay in cyprus max 3 months as a tourist -

hope i made myself clear

Slimmer no it does not. If either of your parents is a TRNC citizen, then the TRNC considers you a citizen regardless of any other nationality you may have or that of the 'other' parent, or where you were born or currently reside. You can visit the TRNC as such a citizen if you reside outside it, for upt ot 90 (or possibly 60) days in a year (or possibly 12 month period) without having to do military service, if you get the right dispensation paperwork each visit. If you stay longer than that you will be liable to do military service, though as a 'returning' (even though you never lived here) cypriot you will have options to reduce the time by paying or do none at all by paying more, that 'normal / non returning' TRNC citizens do not have.

Thats as things stand atm, though there are realitic noises that this may all get changed in the medium future.

slimmer : i don't know how old is your son but it is better for you to inquiery - ours sons when they were 18 years old and coming to cyprus for holidays had to get a paper to got out as my husband is TC ! my friend from UK didn't do it when his son came over for the first time and missed his planed - of course because it is the father they have TC names so much more easier to reconize !

sylvie I dont know what they know and how they know it, I am just explaining my understadning of what the rules are. It may be possible to avoid service because they dont know but the risks are real in that if you think they do not know but actualy they do or find out later you may end up in a much worse situation.
