www.directgov.co.uk or go to the local Jobcentre when you get back to the UK and ask about which areas are dealing with the Olympics. Some contracts were awarded to certain London Boroughs.

Orhan Read the Evening Standard, the London Evening Paper on one day they will run construction jobs. Most if not all jobs will be for self employed people, you need to register with HM Revenue and Customs and the Contributions Agency. The Direct Gov website mentioned above will give you information on this or Google Construction Industry Scheme or see an Accountant. Constuction work on the Olympics is not at this stage going to be available.

Orhan, when you work in the uk you have to pay national insurance and tax on your earnings. If you work for an employer they will deduct these from your wage. Being self employed is a bit more complicated and you have to go to the inland revenue or tax people and register as self employed and apply for a special card, I think it might be a p6o, sorry, not sure. It is then up to you to pay your tax and insurance or employ an accountant, who for a yearly sum, will advise you and see to all your paperwork etc etc.

Orhan, one to put in your telephone book when you arrive, maybe worth a call....www.gvplastering.co.uk Also Orhan you maybe asked for qualifications and have to prove them with Certificates etc. Also to work on a Construction site you will need a CSCS card and maybe your own tools. Just letting you know.

Orhan, There are not many unemployed painters and decorators anywhere in London, especially someone with plastering skills as well. So good luck with your job hunting.

Interesting to see a post about someone going from N. Cyprus to London - and no warnings about the pitfalls there! Orhan I hope you have friends/family in London, and have arranged for somewhere to live. With regard to income tax and national insurance, there are websites, but they are very complicated. If you are going to be self employed if you visit the Jobcentre and the Local Authority when you get to London they should have leaflets (possibly even in Turkish!) which may help you and give you the addresses. Good luck

Orhan I wish you well. London is my home town, but I could noty afforde to go back there. There are many good places and good people in London, and I hope you get a job. there is a recession in U.K as well and many people are suffering, so it might be an idea to get your family to do some research for you before you go. London is a BIG place (30 miles across and with 13 million people). If you have family inU.K, are you eligible for a British passport? are you eligible to work legally? do find out about that. It would be awful if you went over and got into big problems. On the other hand, I guess you could come back. Good luck with it all. Hope you succeed.

Orhan good luck in your move and you could always do what many expats here do and just get jobs through your friends there and build up a client base, there will always be plenty work for a good plasterer in England. And before the pack decend I know ! but it's a fact of life and theres plenty on this board that are working illegally here so best not to open that can of worms lol
