Alsancak, today. They still build beautiful walls in Northern Cyprus, though the lack of the all-important keystone may worry some people... It's the entrance of a new fish and kebab restaurant, next to the Fast Food Restaurant. The new restaurant will open next month and hasn't got a name yet, the owner told me.

So, is this restaurant (with or without keystone) being built to the left or right of the FF Restaurant (as you look at it)?

Cheers.

Ah, but will they cook anything other than the ubiquitous Bream and Bass with a bit of salmon thrown in for good measure. Unless they have it brought in "fresh" from Turkey on a daily basis, then the selection is poor here.

Gemini39 a keystone acts as a wedge from the downforce above so the heavier load it can take before collapsing on itself

Thanks for the info, viper.

I suppose we'll have to wait and seen what fish may/may not be on offer. Still, nice and local for us, so fingers crossed

I think that the keystone is the final stone in an arch. The centre one at the top that holds all the rest together.

In the Middle Ages a keystone was shaped and placed by a chief mason, always a member of the group of superior craftsmen who were highly valued and sought after in Western Europe and during the Crusades. Also in the Holy Land, Cyprus and other countries. There are many churches/cathedrals, castles and private houses in Cyprus with incredible shaped keystones - fitting to the millimetre! Too many to show them all, but here is a fine example (can still be seen in walled Famagusta): Biddulph's Gate. More info on this webpage:

▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/CASTLES/CYPRUS/FAMAGUSTA/PHO_PIC_WEB/biddulph's-gate/index.html ].

And here is Biddulph's Gate in detail:

Now that I'm at it... If you are interested (and want a great morning/afternoon out!): visit the Lapidary Museum in Nicosia.

▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/CASTLES/CYPRUS/NICOSIA/TEXT/lapidary_museum/lapidary_museum_txt_1.html ].

The TRNC exhibits a marvelous collection of medieval findings there!

And you'll see how medieval builders did their work (still standing after eight centuries - how about your modern house..? ) and the (few!) tools they used.

@ msg 10, minertor: (...) I think that the keystone is the final stone in an arch. (...)

▶ Not necessarily. A keystone in medieval buildings was often used in vaulted rooms with four, six or more ribs in the ceiling. An interesting example can be seen in the vaulted cellars (the Cellarium) underneath the refectory (resting on massive columns in these cellars!) of Bellapais Abbey.

However, there are many more examples, especially in Lefkoşa and Famagusta.

Absolutely stunning craftmanship. Masons spent their entire lives perfecting their craft and this is the proof of it!

I have had worse fish.. than in NC...

So i look forward to a new place opening in Alsancack...

The farmed fish here beats Tesco's river cobbler and all the other imported rubbish available in UK...

OK come on stop clownfishing around now. The original post is clearly trying to drum (<--- that's a fish name by the way) up interest in this restuarant. Its time salmon got this thread back ontrack. I can sense the tench ion rising by the minute.

But hang on,we are getting carried away , this is the TRNC, so it can only be Farmed Bass or Bronze Head Bream or Red Mullet...but we can always dream of a proper fish restaurant worthy of a new Arch......

Two Great Whites are swimming past Escape Beach at the height of Summer. One turns to the other and says " Quiet for July isnt it?"

The way I read message 90 is:

'Only two things smell of fish and one is....Richard.

I am sure you did not mean it to read that way but you should be a little bit more careful with your postings.

@ msg 98, eager (or shall I give your real name..? Oh well, forget it.): (...) Have to be a brain sturgeon (...)

▶ "sturgeon". Huh? You don't have to be a brain surgeon, you need one.
