We own there but only holiday there not live there. There are many ex pats that do live there and a few bars run by ex pats. It is very quiet in winter. A lovely little fishing village. Very laid back with some lovely places to eat. Near enough to Famagusta to travel every day but far enough away to relax. Lovely beaches nearby. Some of the best on the island. Local bus that runs through from Famagusta up to the top of the lsland. In my opinion, if I was going to live on the island I would look at Bogaz/Iskele first as you can get easily to anywhere but have great things to look at and do on your doorstep.

On the other hand, check where the new road is going as this could either spoil the place or make the place depending on exactly where it goes.

Summer is different. Its busy but family friendly. At the end of the day, it depends what kind of life you are after. Although there are many ex pats, it is a locals village most of the year.

Dogs are not allowed on public beaches in the summer season. For obvious health reasons.

We also have a holiday Villa there so i am biased , we love the relaxed , unpretentiousness and rawness of the area , great uncrowded beaches the people are so friendly and warm towards you , yes quiet in winter , a lttle livlier in the summer months , we made the right choice buying there . You can get nearly everything you want from nearby Iskele , and what you can't get someone will know someone who can help you .

Good luck , simbas

In fact dogs are not allowed on public beaches at any time of year... in reality this rule is seldom if ever enforced but sod's law says it will be just when you thought you were safe....

My first holiday in TRNC was at Salamis Hotel. And got to know the area.Lovely beaches, small intimate restaurants. But,what I loved, quite close to the Karpas, which I love.

I don't like driving thro' Bogaz, now. There's a complex on the right coming from Salamis, looks like an open prison !!!

I chose Lapta eventually, unlimited water for the garden, supermarkets in walking distance.

For the residents who live or have lived there in Bogaz district, is there the same amount of animal poisining that exists to the west of Girne?

I would say that around Lapta and the villages near by, you wouldn't get a prettier place.

The mountains, the sea views, and walks are far prettier than around the Bogaz area... But then it all depends on what you want ...

The Bogaz area is too flat and the landscape is harsher, but then thats just our opinion .... Best to visit and then travel the areas ...

Bogaz is the place to be,

lovely friendly locals, surrounding mountains and beaches with the fishing village and nearby restaurants and local shops.

Not jammed packed with expats as in the northern part of the island.

A major plus is having Simbas living opposite us.

Re : Comparison of beaches and coastline

The beaches from Selamis and further north along the Karpaz are, in my opinion, better sand-quality-etc-wise than those in the Girne area and for most of the Magusa-Karpaz coastline you will not be pestered by nasty little men asking you to pay for the use of the beach. What's more, because the coastline on the whole is straighter with only a few rocky outcrops jutting out to sea, the swimming is, I guess, safer here in the east.

However, I agree with DizzyCows - being close to the sea is not just about swimming. For me you can't beat the views around Lapta, with its little bays and rocky islands close to the shore ... and of course the glorious mountain views just behind you.

Would Bogaz residents think it less cold there at present than west of Girne?

Msg 20 - "Would Bogaz residents think it less cold there at present than west of Girne?"

Temperature-wise, there's no real difference between Bogaz/Magusa and Girne. However, I would say that, in Winter, Lefkosa is 1 or 2 degrees colder than the places on the coast. And in Summer, Lefkosa is a couple of degrees warmer.

Robin, sorry just saw your posting.I,have a few secret places where I let her off-lead.I think the secret is to find places where the shepherds don't graze their flocks. My last 10 years in Uk,was the west coast of Wales. There farmers would shoot your dogs in the lambing season,if your dogs ran not on lead

Hate to say this but having stayed in several different areas within the TRNC, it's hard to get away from barking dogs. Initially I had very disturbed sleep but after a while it became "normal" background noise.

You learn to live with it.

Its the most uninspiring Cyprus landscape you could imagine. You drive through and its like a ghost town the only thing missing is the tumble weed.

It is dusty in the summer and drab in the winter and another minus point is Simbas lives there.

I cant imagine why anybody would chose there in preference to the North Coast that has a variety of topography a choice of entertainment and life !!

Its all a matter of your taste. I would only live on that side of the island and find Kyrinia and surrounding areas nice for a day trip or a long weekend but could not stay there any longer than that. The Famagusta side I find more relaxing, more beautiful and friendly. But in England I live in the countryside and could never live in a town.

Why dont you get a 6 month rental and try it. Then if its not for you go to the Kyrinia side and rent there and see which part is best for you. You need 6 months so you can see both the tourist season and the local seasons in both parts.

Good luck.

Here is a link to a new beach project to be development by Iskele Belediyesi just a few kilometres south of Bogaz, there is also a cycleway and park area already underway to run alongside the new dual carriageway starting next to the Iskele/Lefkosa road junction.

Bogaz has a very pretty harbour and the beaches from Bogaz to the Karpaz are absolutely stunning , uncrowded and uncomparable with the crowded ,rocky coves on the Girne side.

There is a good community where both expats and Cypriots join in with the activities.

Famagusta old city (25 minutes away ) is beautiful,I love walking around the back streets looking at the old buildings. Salamis amphitheatre & ruins are really interesting too.

I must say that I has a fantastic time at the modern Girne amphitheatre when we went to watch "Funky Monkey","Secret Police" and "The Bohemians" in concert. The only thing that spoilt it were the drunken expats who didn't stop moaning about the bar running out of beer - perhaps they should have settled in Spain?

Sooooooo glad I chose to live in Bogaz

Re: Msg33,

Yeah, it is what we really need: more concrete and more tarmac straight on the sandy beaches (or whatever left of them after the idiotic 'widening' of the road!

My husband and I have just returned from Boghaz, after 2 weeks of working on the holiday apartment which I bought last year. He had not seen the place but liked it, so he said. The hills are gorgeous which is my favourite view, but that could be because we live in flat Norfolk. However, the sea, beaches etc. are in walking distance, and although it is a small place, it is very friendly. I went there on my own the first time and was very pleasantly surprised by the reception I received, ex pats and locals. We had no end of help on our visit which you just don't get at home.

It is difficult to say what it would be like living there permanently, but I have met lots of people who do, and they have no regrets.
