Iceman

So do you think that average speed cameras are bad thing? From what I have seen from the existing cameras they just encourage speeding in between.

The best thing is cruise control on the car when in average speed camera area from uk motorway experience

But if it takes some of the loony tunes off the road so be it ) ) )

No problem with speed cameras .

If only you knew what the speed limit was on any given piece of road.

The signing is so inconsistent in TRNC!!

And the drivers of very fast "posh" cars drive at enormous speeds and must either pay lots in fines - or know somebody!!??

To answer the original question - yes they do work at night and in both directions! They are digital and as such do not require daylight.

I used to think they only worked as you drive towards them but I got a ticket doing just the opposite... bummer :(

Blue butterfly , we weren't speeding dangerously as you put it, we on both occasions got past the 65 limit by 3-5 miles as on both occasions we were overtaking & as you do you tend to go a little faster to pull out of the way. We are on a hire car & were very aware of speeding but sometimes the chance to come down from 65 to 50 to 30 is very poor , so no we aren't maniac drivers ! The good news is my husband was driving so at least I don't get a non stop reminder as befalls most women if they are the unlucky one behind the wheel.

Buddygirl,

Stop making excuses. You were speeding, shame on you!

I am a big supporter of average speed cameras because they will force people to slow down. The current cameras do nothing about safety and most people slow down temporarily except people like me who remember to slow down after the camera! It takes me one and half hour to drive from Famagusa to Girne, so I believe that is a very safe speed. Usually I get caught to the camera going through the army village with a lunatically speed limit of 50 kph. with hardly any pedesrian around.

If I was you I wouldnt worry about the speed cameras, they are nothing against the "careless" local drivers... The "wrecked" fiat drivers who think they are in formula one racing... Worse, are the "Dahkar Rally" racers who intimidate anyone they come across, I am talking about the BMW & Mercedes drivers who not only speed, and over take, they also have mobile phones stuck to their ears.... Bless the moroons ....

So drive carefully, nevermind the "speed cameras", they shouldnt bother you... BE SAFE.

To be able to use average speed cameras effectively you need to have roads with minimum entry/exit points so that the cameras can record a vehicle once at point A then at point B and calculate the average speed in between....

WE have so many entry/exit points, even our main highways do not have this luxury..

All these speed cameras are seen as cash machines by the administration..if they really want to improve road safety they should start by investing money into correcting the mistakes they built into roads themselves...

For a start, they should learn what a roundabout is and how it should be built..they should minimize and improve entry/exit points to high speed dual carrigeways..

And while they are at it they can tighten MOT regulations and not allow unsafe vehicles on the roads!!

emagin you're drivining in "camers" free road (day or night), and the only thing you need to concentrate on is the road, speed limit and watch out for the "Dhakar Rally" drivers....

For your safety, just consider all cameras are in operation day and night......., so STICK TO THE ROAD RULES, NEVERMIND CAMERAS...

I personally despice bad drivers NOT the cameras....

Living in view of the "new bypass" we are horrified at the speed some cars and bikes travel especially late at night. I hope, for everyones sake, they plan to create some form of spped control on this major death trap instead of the lesser routes which seem to be over subscribed already.

I drove an average 1000 miles per week in the UK as part of my job, for many years of my working life, so would class myself as a safe and experienced driver.

The general standard of driving in the TRNC is appalling and I really wonder how many of those on the road have actually ever had any driving lessons let alone passed a test.

Perhaps as well as fining the bad drivers there should be some compulsary form of driver re-education ( as in fact there is in the UK for certain driving offences). All the speed cameras do is generate revenue for the government and do nothing to address the problem of sheer bad driving.

Isn't amazing? All the crashes are reported as being "accidents". NOT THEY ARE NOT (at least not most of them) They are "dangerous" drivers, or at least "driving without due care and attention" drivers. Then of course they are reported to have "lost control of their vechicle" Of course they have because they are driving too bl++++y fast!!! On top of that, has no-one in this country heard of the word "aqua-planing"?? Some of the worst driving I have seen here is on the Girne to Lefkosa road by an assortment of Government and RHA registered vehicles.
