Just to even up the balance - although i expect this will not receive so many comments or views as the negative thread previously (only bad news sells papers !) - I hade to make a call to KAR about a young female pointer dog who had obviously been dumped near us. The lady in the office was polite and helpful and took all f the relevent details. She explained how they have to prioritise which animals they can help but as it was a Female it took higher priority than males. She also explained that until space came availble at the Centre the dog would need to stay where it was. I agreed that if space bacame avaiable then i would help KAR by taking the dog up to the Centre - this saved them sending the van out to me - it also meant that i wouldn't have to wait for the van which in turn saved me longer time with the dog hanging around. After 4 days it became clear that there was no way i would be able to get hold of the dog - she was too scared and ran when approached. ctd

ctd i again rang KAR to explain. They gave me more advise about food coaxing etc but said not to worry if needs be they would send their Community Warden to help catch the dog with a trap if necessary. We followed their advise and after a further 3 days the dog was happy eating whislt we were there. The KAR rang to say there was space at the Centre - we were still not confident about catching te dog and putting her in our car. KAR sent their Community Warden - he rang to say when he was coming and we were asked to not feed er until he arrived or to feed her and try and put a lead on her until he got there. He came - we fed her and he gently approached her and managed to get a leash on. Se was takent o the Centre - we knew that there was every chance that she would be returned to our area after neutering. At the Centre it was found that she had an infection that needed treatment so she was going to be staying there and would be taken to the vet daily for her treatment and checks. ctd

We followed her progress and were so struck by the kindness and care that the poor dog received by KAR. It made us feel somewhat humble as our initial approach to them had been quite "antagonisitic" - we wanted her moved there and then. Ashamedly we wanted it to be "not in our back yard" situation. It was only KAR staff/volunteers attitude that we actually listened to and began to understand what they are faced with day in day out. They are not perfect BUT are any of us. They can only do what they can and have to accept that they cannot help all of the animals all of the time - they also cannot please all of the people all of the time. We went to the Centre last week to see how the dog was doing and she wasn't there. She had been homed to a family who had visited and seen her and decided to take her on. I am told that there is a 50TL homing fee but in no way does that reflect the cost of the care and outlay just spent, by KAR, on that 1 dog. But she now has a home. KAR get my vote.

Cleos - it is nice when people do understand why KAR cannot always help as/ when help is asked for. As you found they will help if they can - but each case is different and has different needs. What is NOT nice is when members of the public rant and rave and are abusive to the people that they are asking for help. Those people who are answering the phone, or are at the Centre, did not cause the problem that the member of the public is calling about. Yet certain members of the public, no doubt also posters on this board, seem to think that because they are told they will have to wait, or "sorry" we cannot help this particular time, it gives them the right to shout, scream and be downright rude. Most of this verbal rudeness comes not from local people but the British Ex- Pat who seems to think they just have to click their arrogant fingers and expect KAR to come running. As you rightly say this post has not received the "Hot" status of the negative one - why ?nothing to rant/rave abo

The2ofus - i know i was guilty of being stroppy, initially, to the lady in the office. We couldn't see the whole picture - just the problem for us at that time. I did apologise to her later. It has really opened my eyes as to the problems they deal with on a continuous basis . Since then i have always made an effort to help in any small way even if it is just to put the odd bag of pasta in their supermarket boxes. Blimey 1TL for a bit of pasta is not going to hurt anyone but it means a meal to one or more of those dogs at the Centre. It is also such a shame the workers/volunteers have to put up with some of the abuse and negativity whislt they are trying to do their best. There is so much going on behind the scenes that i never knew about (education programmes/homing dogs and cats Abroad in particular UK and Germany/liasion with Belederes and Gvmt/ etc etc) - most of which goes on unnoticed. They seem to attract attention only when they have NOT done something.

I found a dog a fews days ago, lying in a pool of blood on the side of the road in Ozankoy. Put the dog in the car and took her to the nearest vets. They rang KAR who said, if you can save her we will take her. Can't say fairer than that. Just hope the girl survived.
