We wondering whether to import our car or sell it here in the UK before we leave.

If we do import it, is there a time limit on how soon we could sell it if we decided to do so?

My reason for asking is that it is an Audi TT coupe and I know once we start having visitors it would not be practical to tote anyone around in unless they are under 4' that is!

I'd strongly advice you to sell your car and buy one over here. Not just so that you can have something more practical but the hussle you have to go through, never mind the cost of importing, unles of course you love your car.

And yes, after all that there is a limit before you could sell the car you import, min. of 2 years.

Darn it! I do love our car and don't relish the thought of selling it. Thanks for the information though, we shall have to think some more about importing it or not.

Moved over at Christmas. Sold the car in UK first. Everyone we spoke too gave us the same info as msg2, it's just too much hassle and too expensive.

We bought over here and it was so much simpler, you just have to be prepared to pay more for less car!!!

Good luck with the move.

What are car prices like over there? obviously we wouldn't buy a coupe again, most likely we would look for something like a Vitara/Landrover especially for the 'rough' road moments Mind you we would have to consider the running costs of those wouldn't we?

The larger the car, the more horrendous the car tax each year. It's very expensive.

Bring the car for a year on a "visitor pass", find out about the tax and if its a ridiculous price then ship the car back home and sell it then. Worth using it here.

Rubyroo,

Have you ever heard of the saying "They have moved the goal posts". Well that really applies here in TRNC big time, we were told we should do what is said in msg9 when we drove here in May of last year. On arrivel we were given a 30 day visa for the vehicale. We then when that 30 days ran out we applied for this 'one year visitors visa' and were given a 60 day visa. When that ran out we again applied for the extension in question and was told, we now had 15 days in which to pay the import duty and get the vehicle road taxed (VERY, very expensive). So when you are told you can use your car for upto a year "take it with a pinch of salt". And just remember, all what you are told you can do, and what you must do here in TRNC the rules will changes along the way.

Thanks for all the reply's especially message 10! I am swiftly finding out how often the rules seem to change.

We will sell the car before we leave and when it is time, put out some feelers for a used car in NC with a smaller engine! does it make any difference to the tax, running costs if it is petrol or diesel in TRNC?

Hi, we did have our car here for just over a year and in total paid 1800tl road tax, we were given a figure to keep car here, which was £8000.00. the car was worth £2,500.00 in UK, although the car had only 30,000 miles on clock. We shipped it back at the cost of £1,250.00. Sold it for £2,500.00 to family friend. We now have a Suzuki SX4, which is a really nice car. We could have saved our self a lot of money by not bringing the car over in the first place but like you, we had the car from new (Mercedes E Class) and loved it. At least when you buy a car here, the prices do not depreciated as quickly as they do in UK and you will always get a good price.

an audi TT COUPE would be the last car on the planet to ship to trnc .... it sits quite low on the ground does.nt it ? so apart from all the highly negative and horrendous stories of importing any vehicle into the trnc ... if one was to do that.. better to bring a machine that would do the job ie landrover freelander , most any 4x4 or if you are a sporty devil then surely a drop head .converttible .. not a 2 dr couple such as you own ... where is your vehicle in the uk ? ill give you a much better price than we-buy -any -car -com ..or ebay auctions .is it the small engine or large engine ? lindsay 07971 339854

I am also a TT owner.

I live in the TRNC but my TT stays safely in the UK. Its far to low to bring out here with these roads and if something goes wrong with it, who's going to fix it?

We have a Ford RangerTwin cab here which is much more suitable if not so cool. You do need something 4 x 4 and with aircon. Forget the cab all you will get is hot and dirty.

We imported our Ranger here when it was 6 monhts old and the tax was stupid. Buy something here.
