A true story of the war seen through the eyes of a child. I was an eight year old going on a 2 week holiday for the 1st time and ended up trapped on the island for 3 months. Paperback due to be printed around mid March 2012, you can pre-order from here: http://www.thegreenline.co.uk

If any members have a book shop in Cyprus and would be interested in ordering a batch, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi I would be interested in reading your book. Is it being published in the TRNC? is it in English? What outlets have you planned for this book?

Best wishes

Hi Mick, the book is in English and will be published in the UK, will however, be looking to get it translated into Turkish at some point. The Green Line will be first printed on Paperback in mid March then published in ePub and Kindle ebook format towards the end of 2012.

The story is about 3 brothers aged 5,7 and 8 on holiday in Cyprus 1974, with mother War breaks out after one week and we end up running from town to town trying to avoid capture. We automatically adapted to the new surroundings as normal daily life and carried on just being normal children most of the time, so the story is humorous as well as nail biting, however, I do not take sides and try to be fair. What I have written is actually true of what we had experienced.

"There are two sides to every story, and Cypriots of Greek and Turkish origins will always recount contradictory versions of those troubled times and the island’s political history."

If anyone is interested in buying my book "The Green Line" and do not want to pre-order from here: http://www.thegreenline.co.uk , I would very much appreciate it if you would be kind enough to leave a message in this forum stating that you would like to buy. This will give me some idea as to how many books I should ship over.

Hi Jonholmes, Looking back, some of the horrific incidents we witnessed, and the experiences we lived through, seem scarcely credible. They showed me, at a very early age, what man is capable of in warfare. They also taught me a lot about Cyprus, its history, its people and its troubles. I have wanted to commit the story to print for a long time, and I’m glad I now have the opportunity. If I have one wish for The Green Line, it’s that it will enable people to have a deeper understanding of Cyprus, and share the hope I have for the island’s future.

In the story there are times when patriotism overtakes, eventhough I had never been to Cyprus before, it was the environment that we were in that had moulded us to feel this way.

So to answer your question, no it is not influenced by later life, I write it as it is remembered. Fortunately, I have an extremely good long term memory.

By the way it is also a light read starting with London life as a child in the early 70's with all the ingredients of being humourus, sad and nail biting. Hope you enjoy!

Thank you Karakum5c. Story is being formated for ePub and Kindle but will not be available until end of 2012. Anyway, story is about early 70's, so holding a paperback book in your hands again may add to the overall experience. Hope you enjoy.

The Green Line

Prologue

One day in 1964, Major-General Peter Young, the British Army officer in charge of the operations of an international peace force in Cyprus, took an old dark green chinagraph pencil, thought for a moment and then drew a line on a map of Nicosia, the capital city. He had just created what would become known the world over as the Green Line, and he had also effectively divided an island in two.

Anyone else interested?

Thanks rejela, I will make contact. I had contacted quite a few newspapers in TRNC via email but have not had any response yet. However, just had a call from UK local paper who want to do a column on the book, so looks promising.

Will give Marion a go. Thanks again for your kind help.

Soner, just write "back to top"and post the message jumps to the top, or you can pay £10 I think and the post becomes sticky and stays up top for a set time period.

Just heard from the author and reading this thread shows there could be a great deal of interest. So do help by telling how many of you are interested in buying this . I am looking forward to it as well. I think in particular that children's perspective of terrible happenings are nothing lkike an adults and so should make interesting reading.

sounds good - at least I think so.

****, Thanks for the good advice. I am hoping that I do not start another war, I know that it will be inevitable that some GC’s may want to deny some of the stories I bring up in the book. I only write what I had seen, experienced and about stories heard, both equally bad on both Turkish and Greek sides. So as it may turn out that I may even get some TC’s getting angry with me. However, I had been moulded by the environment that I was in, with patriotism, so the story will inevitably reflect more on TC’s side of the war, as I write it as I remember it.

The start of the story is about us as wild London street kids and the fun we had, then end up in a middle of a war and adapt to the sudden change. We were just kids and still had some fun, I try to bring this out in the book which does make it quite humorous in places.

Bestsellers Bookstore will be ordering 10 books - looks like first come first served.

Thanks to everyone that has registered their interest on this forum, and to all those that have ordered online from the website.

If anyone is thinking about borrowing the book from their friends, then forget about it; with new technology out now, the paperbacks will disintegrate after first read.

Keep leaving your interest on the forum or buy now at: http://www.thegreenline.co.uk and let others know here...

The Greenline paperback has just been through formating and ready for print. It may be printed much earlier than anticipated, just waiting for the ISBN to come through and then it will go straight to print, possibly next week.

Keep buying online or posting your interest here.

emineden1, thank you for your kind words, I hope you enjoy the story. It has cost me a small fortune in getting to this stage, but worth every penny. Not in it for the money - just feel it was something I needed to do. Kind regards Soner

"The Turkish Prime Minister, Bülent Ecevit, flew to London to ask the British government to intervene in a joint effort in its capacity as a guarantor power, but they declined to take action. Turkish warships were already at sea.

Ecevit then made a call from London to Turkey saying: “Ayşe is going on vacation,” which was the code for “attack”. The Turkish intervention in Cyprus began early on 20 July 1974."

Soner, I had a look in your original link above where there is a short paragraph from your book. You claim you arrived in Cyprus 1974 on a "Jumbo Jet". As far as I know (and I stand to be corrected) there had never been passenger carrying "Jumbo Jet" flights from UK to Cyprus (and I stand to be corrected on this ) Do you recall which country the jumbo jet belonged to (i.e was it BEA, BOAC, Cyprus Airways or what...) I am just asking out of professional interest

Ilk22--I think you will find that bigOz is correct,a 747 did not fly in from the UK on the occasion you are referring to.An application for a 747 to come into Larnaca was made in 1988 but that was rejected. I think perhaps you mean a 727 or 737.That apart ,I will be ordering a copy.

Hi bigOz, Ossie, yes this was mentioned to me before, but British Airways 747 is what I have in my memory, it may be that I confuse this with a flight I was on to Canada in 1976 or even the return flight from Istanbul to Heathrow in 1974, but I wantd to record it as it is in my head. I was only eight years old and flying on a plane for the first time, it came accross as enormous. So you are most definately right it saying that it was not a 747, I would not disagree one bit. If you read the book hopefully you will feel that the story is actually coming from a child.

Hi Soner,

When we're next in the Girne area, we intend to visit Bestsellers to give our deposit.

However, to save us the journey, are there any bookshops in the Lefkoşa or Mağusa areas planning to stock the book ? - Because that's where my wife and I live and work.

By the way, my TC wife is as interested as I am to read your book, because she too was born in London in the 60s (albeit late 60s) and can relate to being "quiet, obedient and respectful Turkish children when our parents were around" and "wild and unruly" at other times.

In any case, please don't trouble yourself if no bookshops in Lefkoşa or Mağusa intend to stock the book.

And of course, all the best with the book sales

Hi Crumpy,

The beginning of the story will take your wife back to those good ole-days, I am sure that she will enjoy the read, and should find it quite funny.

I have been trying to contact bookshops in Lefkosa and Magosa, but can not get hold of email addresses through the internet.Companies in TRNC still seem a little behind when it comes to email accounts, have even noticed that some people make them up on their businesscards or get the addresses wrong, very fustrating.

If anybody knows of any bookstore in Lefkosa then please pass on their email address. Even trying stores on the Greek side but non have shown interest as of yet.

Crumpy & Slimmer, thanks you so much for your support.

Just 999, 928 short of my 1 million target.......lol - Hope to get there one day.

Please keep posting or add link to your facebook accounts. Let others know too - as mentioned before I am promoting this myself until such times a serious agent takes interest.

Hi again Soner,

Re : "If anybody knows of any bookstore in Lefkoşa, ..." - Have you tried Rüstem Kitap Evi in Sarayönu? It's the one that shares its premises with Gloria Jeans.

According to http://www.cypyp.com/databooks.htm the bookstore's telephone number is 227 2455. There's also a few more bookstores' numbers on that web page.

Bol şanslar !

"I called them for their email address, and they could not get it right." Obviously some bookshops here in Northern Cyprus are not that technologically advanced to use an email address Oh well, as you suggested Soner, I will drop by Bestsellers when I'm next in the Girne area.

Soner, I would love to read your book too. I am a fan of Ulus Irkad and his writing. It is good to read an account of things as they were without the usual apportioning of blame. Looking backwards achieves nothing.

Thanks pollymarples. I do hope you enjoy the story. Exactly as I feel, looking backwards achieves nothing - I hope my book will make some people understand that both sides need to move on, no point in dwelling on the past, it was such a long time ago and life is too short.

Soner

Hi

I have been advised by printing company that they will be delivery first printed batch of The Green Line to me today 7th March 2012 London.

Anyone that has pre-ordered in the UK will have their copies posted to them immediately so should receive in the next day or two. Copies to other countries will also be posted out except TRNC as I understand the postal system can take a long time from UK.

If you have pre-ordered and are in the TRNC, I will post these out on the 12th March within the TRNC, unless you prefer to collect at the Book Signing Event at Bestseller Bookstore in Karakum on 17thMarch 2pm-4pm - in which case please let me know asap via email to: shout@soner.co.uk and I will put your copy aside, just bring your PayPal payment confirmation email with you on the day.

Thank you all once again for your interest.

Hey Soner, I really enjoyed your book thank you. I was rolling around in fits about the hospital visit and then the photo on the back cover made sense! Thanks for sharing the experiences.

Regards

Paul
