Women will be able to get the contraceptive Pill in pharmacies without a prescription from next year under two pilot schemes. If the trials are successful, the Pill may be put on the same footing as the morning-after Pill, which is already widely available at pharmacies without direct authorisation from a doctor. Is this a positive step? Will this prevent all these teenage pregnancies? Is this the end of one parent families?

No, no and er no... I think. Taking medicines without knowing the physical effects is not a good thing some very fertile women might need a different strength of pill...others only a very low strength one.. there are known side effects that can be cumulative and dangerous... The only thing that can prevent teenage pregnancies is abstention... Bill, you are joking... removal of benefit rights might do more... I sort of don't agree with this as it would punish the unborn but it would certainly concentrate a few minds....

...The only thing that can prevent teenage pregnancies is abstention... Gavin, have you abstained from drinking water when you're thirsty? I take on board your comments regarding the effects of medication but I think the article went on to say that it would involve a discussion with the Pharmacist before the medication was given. However, how would you know you were allergic to something without first taking the medication?

Gavin, this is an extract from The Independant: "Women will be able to obtain the oral contraceptive pill after an interview with a pharmacist. If the pilots are successful, the Pill could be put on the same footing as the morning-after pill, which is already available at pharmacies without direct authorisation from a doctor."

The big problem in Britain is that the useless Government have provided single females with all the benefits they need so many have become almost baby factory's and never having to do a day's work in their lives ( I know babies need looking after before the ladies get on to me about this). There is now no incentive for these single parents to go to work as they have everything handed to them on a plate!!!!!!! These people obviously don't use cotraception so it will make no difference if it is available openly or not

gibson i totally agree. benefits and housing. well i would love someone to have paid me to sit at home, in a nice council house. as for those who go on having baby after baby, its more profitable than working. a village we once lived in, one family had 13 kids at last count. you can imagine the benefits bill for this lot with parents to lazy to work. they moved because the council gave them a bigger house. my kids were never latch key kids but i always worked.

Unfortunately cutting the benefits is a sure fire way of creating more poverty. We should introduce a system whereby from, say 01/01/2010, no benefits will be payable to new single parents and housing will not be available. They should be made to live at home with their own parents or live in a supervised hostel.
