10pm Monday, January 16th. If someone knows how to c&p the relevant transmission about the modern, recent history of Cyprus I would be grateful, it's towards the end. Interesting listening for all.

You can indeed listen to the program on the link you have given Richard. Thanks for the heads up, am listening to it now. The Cyprus piece starts at 30:50 mins/sec into the program and you can just jump to that part with the 'slider bar' at the bottom.

As usual the only real mention the Turkish Cypriots got was ..................When Turk Invaded in 1974. Usual BBC reporting................total bias to the Greeks and towards the end their Israel 'brothers'. No mention of the recent agreement signed by 'Cyprus' to give the Israel air force and navy full rights to 'defend' and patrol Cyprus seas and airspace. SCAREY!

When will the BBC start using less biased language when discussing these issues? Not only does it annoy, it is simply unfair!!

wylam message 4:

as you will remember turkey unilaterally severed its historic links with israel

...after backing the ill-fated mavi mari expedition

perhaps nobody expected that israel would so quickly take up the alternative

offer of co-operation and mutual defence with south cyprus

and the "isolated" state has worked hard to maintain a working relationship

with russia, eg a no-visa regime and unprecedented joint naval manoevers

perhaps the theme of the report is correct, cyprus is becoming a more vital

strategic area not only for the energy question but also the very serious and

long term troubles in neaby syria with huge implications for iran and the us

...that is why the toothless old lion will hang onto the SBA's come what may

The commentator said "Turkey craves membership of the E.U "...I believe the E.U have made it impossible for

Turkey to join,so they are looking to the East...Inshallah

following up on what ismet/elko 2 once hinted at,

turkey does appear to be in process of applying to join the eu

...whether their government really thinks they will ever be allowed to

join is another question entirely

I'm not sure it is as trite as "looking to the east" ...as an alternative

firstly things have not gone as well as hoped with the neighbours

secondly the ak has an islamic platform so it would be very surprising

if turkey did not put a high value on relations with the moslem world

thirdly to keep a foot in the door with both europe (eu "application")

and the usa ("missile defence) while letting russia build reactors,

will still allow turkey to screw certain concessions from these players

...at some time in the future

turkey craves eu membership, like I crave winning on the uk lottery

Thanks Brinsley for drawing attention to this.

But how sad to have yet another example of the appalling prejudice of the BBC - I havent yet heard a programme from them that even paid lip service to presenting a balanced picture, It makes me wonder how truly "independent" "Aunty" is, and how accurate the reports we get on other issues.

A shame the Brits cant get together and make a concerted effort to pressure the BBC into presenting both sides of the coin of the "Cyprus Question", rather than blackening the image of the TRNC with moans in inapproprite media about Estate Agents and animal poison.

bizzilizzi and others,

by and large proper documentaries do allow each side to have their "say"

but this brief report is a lazy and partisan view of the situation in cyprus,

the journos were obviously well-briefed by the gc's prior

curiously when east germany was occupied by the ussr, it was given the

status of a state but described by some west germans as the "soviet

zone"

bearing in mind that south cyprus upgraded its "european" status when it

joined the eu "on behalf of all cypriots" all this may be very disappointing

but hardly a surprise

though the uk, and the swedish foreign minister are virtually the only

europeans honestly supporting turkey's eu "application"

although the turkish army does provide the main defence for north cyprus,

give it another fifty years and all this grizzling about the "occupied areas"

may be ringing a bit hollow

my apologies for all the inverted commas the bloke who used to type most

of them has disappeared without trace

Only just seen this. Yet the BBC are again totally bias and also inaccurate. To air your views you can always go to the BBC Complaints page - which they do sometimes take notice of, here is the web link:
