Birdy I was under the impression that all T/Cs could get an ROC passport (EU) so this is a strange question .What would be the difference ?

Birdy even if "british" people obtained a T/c passport they would be able to get an EU passport ,the whole of Cyprus is technically in the EU.If you hold a T/C passport you can reside anywhere in Cyprus , you can work anywhere and receive health care , in fact it would make sense to swap/change .

british people already have 'EU'passport - As msg 4,T/Cs can get same. So why would a Brit swap a 'UK'passport !! for another EU passport?? Think you need to come out of that water - been in too long

Thank you Tania , my point exactly, the strange thing is people live /visit a country with so little knowledge , quite a statement really. In fact without sounding like a racist , if you got a new T/C (EU) passport you may qualify for more benefits, especially if you have lived out of the UK for a while .

Birdy , the whole of Cyprus is in the EU, I will provide a link soon , seriously do you live there ? you obviously have the internet , I suggest a google search .North Cyprus does receive EU grants (not alot) but is technically suspended at the present untill a solution is found. The EU only recognise(right or wrong) the ROC as an official government .

They are facts, I am amased at the lack of knowledge, and Mikelapta see how much joy you get trying to get your Phillipino girlfriend on a non-eu passport back into the UK. I read on this forum everyday "going back for health reasons" if the T/C passport could not be exchanged for an EU one would there be many takers ?????

Firstly, there is no way this racist country would give any of us a passport - that would imply that we could get full citizenship which is not possible. Secondly, no country recognises the TRNC passport so if you surrendered your UK passport you could never leave TRNC even for a holiday (except to Turkey) - which is why so many TCs get EU passports from RoC. Thirdly, I doubt that an ex-UK citizen could persuade the RoC that they were a bona fide Turkish Cypriot and thus get a passport from them.

Message 18: 'Secondly, no country recognises the TRNC passport so if you surrendered your UK passport you could never leave TRNC even for a holiday (except to Turkey) - which is why so many TCs get EU passports from RoC.' Not quite true, the United Kingdom, United States of America, France, Australia, Pakistan and Syria currently officially accept TRNC passports with the relevant visas. AJ

I am a TRNC citizen by birth right via a TC father and I hold a UK/EU passport and citizenship, by birt there and of a UK citizen mother. If the only way to get TRNC citizenship was to have to loose my UK citizenship then I would not get TRNC citizenship, even if that meant I could not reside in the TRNC or even visit it. I do not like to say this but it is the truth for me. I love both my 'homelands' , the UK and Cyprus and am proud to be a citizen of both, but if it were a matter of one or the other then it would be UK over TRNC for me I am afraid.

Erolz, well said , but I think this question was aimed at ill-imformed ex-pats ,who do not understand the country nor the politics of where they live .If I am wrong I apologise .

erolz (mess 20) I think your honesty is to be admired! (certainly by me) I would love to know the reasons why you would prefer the UK over the TRNC when it comes down to citizenship? I think I understand why! but would like for you to explain.............

It is just down to selfish utility really. UK citizenship 'gives' or 'provides' more benefits for me as an indivdual than TRNC does. I do not not know what else I could honestly say really.

Msg 19,the most important part of that statement is "with a Visa" , if you have a UK/EU passport is it the same ? As I have not travelled there I do not know.

Message 24 The last time I traveled to Australia I needed a visa on my EU/UK passport, in fact most countries I have traveled to required a visa whether in advance of travelling or on arrival.

Having lived in the TRNC for l5 years, and hopefully never intending to live anywhere else , I would like to say out of loyalty I would swop .................... but, apart from practicalities, one must have loyalty to one's native country, and much as I deplore the way it seems to be going - just out of sentiment I would be very loath to surrender my "UK" passsport. As Erolz says it is possible to love two countries, even if one is only by adoption. On a point of fact - I though it was part of the RoC propaganda was that nationality and facilities were available to anyone born in Cyprus/and or both of whose parents were. I doubt if they would extend that to people from elsewhere even if they did manage to obtain a TRNC passport.
