Glorybee,

Click on their member name on the left and if they have an e-mail address no problems. But I am sure you will find that a lot for whatever reason like to remain anonymous.

What if you think you might have been the focus of a scammer??? Who would you report it to?

You don't... You just adjust your email inbox to filter the address of the culprit as "spam" or "junk" and their emails will be directed there instead of "inbox"

I have been using the same email address (erolz@cream.org) for well over 12 years now and have always used a shortend version of my real name on forums for as long and can not say I have any problems. Yes I get spam mails but I get those one alternate email addresses that I have not used on forums and have existed for much less time than my main one and I manage spam mail in various ways.

I am not convinced that anonimty on forums is necessary if you behave decently and in the same manner you would in the real world. It might be useful if the previous is not the case I guess but I leave that to others. Personaly I have no interest in 'saying' anything other than clearly as myself be that in the real world or the virtual.

an email address is more akin to a phone number. I have never been ex directory in the pre internet days, you could look up my phone number in the BT phone book then, so its no different now for me with my email address. The point of having one is so people can contact me, same as having a phone number.

By the would happily give a stranger my home address. I do it all the time and have done it here on this forum. It is not a secret. I am who I am and I live where I live. In the UK you can find out someones home address easily via totaly legitimate and public records.

What does everyone have to hide ? Am I really so unsusal or is it actualy this unatural virtual forum that is unusal ?

erolz I totally agree with you, not everyone who does not divulge their e mail address is trying to hide but I find no problem with divulging mine or my address. My doberman dogs would love anyone to visit !!!! LOL

birdman, why do feel the need for having 'doberman dogs' to protect you?

went to meet someone at their house few months back, who had a rather large house being 'protected' by 3 geman shepperds. They weren't in.I was in the garden playing with all 3 by the time they got in.

I too have nothing to hide BUT I have no wish to be bombarded with e.mails from anyone who - say - have a personality disorder, a walter mitty disposition, are racist...et cetera - so I am circumspect to whom I give my contact details. The forum members I am in touch with know me and vice versa - life is too short to open oneself up to gutless bullies who hide behind their machines, and in the throes of chemical intervention, type up a storm and press 'send'!

Before the internet if I were to recieve abusive phone calls on my publicaly listed phone number I would contact the phone company and if necessary have the numbers that these calls are comming from blocked. With an email address my approach would be in a similar vein. I would at first just ignore any abusive emails. If they continued I would contact the email provider they are being sent via and block the email address they are being sent from.

You can protect yourself from recieving abusive postal mail by keeping your postal address secret, you can protect yourself from recieiving abusive phone calls by keeping your phone number secret and you can protect yourself from recieiving abusive emails by keeping your email secret, but is that really any way to live ? Each to their own I guess but for me I prefer to not have to 'hide' and if I do get abusive postal mail, phone calls or email to deal with that directly.

MsGarnet, exactly ... If you have strong views on a subject and some don't like it or agree, which is quite within their rights, it should not become a ' Ill get my hubby' or vile responses as some have had when they have had their email on show.

Simples.... dont encourage ... no email ...
