britvic, they probably wouldn't get as far as measuring our taste in films, but would be asking 'why do these mad people spend so much of their precious time on a blooming forum with people they have never met and may never do'

Back in 1981, Zulu was voted the best film ever made by the National Fronts arts and educational sub committee. It was a close run race as Roots was a popular choice and led the voting for a long time.

Deecyprus4, showing your age gal , Debbie (aka Bambi Woods)did do Dallas(in 1978) but I think by now she has probably done half of the 50 other States before gravity made her boobies get in the way.

Debbie is now doing Oolong , I don't think they care about her sagginess down there. But there again with all her money they are probably still the highlight.

Groucho, FYI, Star wars was initially a low budget film,

Star wars: Produced with a budget of $11,000,000

Cleopatra: it was made at a cost of $44 million — the equivalent of $295 million in 2007 dollars.

Titanic became at the time the most expensive film ever made, costing approximately US$200 million

Waterworld: With a budget of $175 million,

Spiderman:With a budget of $258 million,

The most expensive film ever made: http://most-expensive.net/movie-ever-made

BillyB - even if the film had been crap (which it definitely wasn't) I would have been more than happy looking at Robert Redford and Paul Newman for a couple of hours.

Of course, they were also in The Sting - another great film.

It's a Wonderful Life with James Stewart, especially at Christmas time. We both cry every time we watch it even though we know exactly what's going to happen. Think this is what Trevor meant.

By the choices, don't think many people on this forum have been recently or go to cinema frequently. Not a critism just an observation.

Although not condoning the practice , but when in TRNC recently noted that all latest films were available in local DVD shop , bought 'Changling' 5ytl , excellent film. Therefore NC expats able to watch new films cheaply, some before actually shown on UK screens..

I go every Sat and Sun, the Rolls Royce of all theaters in Hollywood, food and drink served and armchair style seating.

The only way to see a film, black box room with exceptional sound.

DVD (specially the bootleg ones) do not give you the real movie experience.

Such a waste, all the time and money that goes into making these films and someone then buys a half assed copy and then say they saw the film..(it is also highly illegal)

Go see it on a real screen , you will see the difference.

Whats the cinema's like in Cyprus anyway? never been to one over there.

Turbo,

One or two points...

It's very nice of you to invite us all to Hollywood to join you... there are no such palaces for us to enjoy here though...

It's not easy to find original copies of DVDs in the TRNC and sending off for them is a fool's errand...

I don't think it's highly illegal as there is no copyright law here... I may be wrong but I think copyright is regarded as the mechanism used in the west to rip people off... and charge over 133 times the production and distribution costs for a DVD. In so doing of course they have created the market for bootleg copies...

Turbo,

'the real movie experience' ?

I was watching a bootleg DVD - obviously taken from the screen with a handheld digicorder - when the silhouette of a lady in a large hat moved across the screen, followed by assorted bumping, shuffling noises.

I thought that it was EXACTLY like the real movie experience!

All it needed was the old man in the dirty mac...

"All it needed was the old man in the dirty mac... " you make a really good feed... now I wonder what quip can we come up with?

You are right the DVD recorded with a handheld video in a crummy flea pit is exactly the cinema experience of my youth... but without the 4D effects like toffees being thrown and other kids constantly squeezing past you on their way to the bogs...

Oh happy days... Saurday Matinees, the Cartoons and episodes of The Lone Ranger, Pathe News...

Groucho. Hi. i dont recall putting out an invitation but hey, if you happen to be in my neighborhood I would be happy to treat you to the ultimate movie experience.

As you can see(from the list earlier) the cost of making a movie, they hope to recoup half their budget from box offices , they rely on international DVD sales to make most of their cash back, then it goes to cable television , then eventually they end up on regular tv for all to see.

If you do a little research you will see that some movies might break even unless it is a blockbuster.

From the actors to the set designers all depend on royalties coming DVD sales or International TV.

Bootlegging is just taking money out of their pockets.

The biggest part of the budget is the ridiculous figures the stars are demanding 20-30 million a movie. I dont feel sorry for them, i feel sorry for the pions that do all the real work putting it all together.

maybe in cyprus they dont have the copywrite protection...

How about places like the UK, you can get the bootleg copies there too, you can even get them out here, but if you are unlucky enough to get caught with one, the penalties are severe.

My question is still out there, has anyone been to any cinemas in TRNC?

I know there is a theater under Lemar in Lefkosa and isn't there one in Girne also?

I am just curious how they are.

Comfortable?

Smoking?

Quality?

I can remember when i was a kid(3-4) when they used to have the outdoor cinemas in Lefkosa by Anibals restuarant by the moat, my dad used to park his lorry outside and we would all watch the film from outside sitting on top of the truck. As kids we used to be so exicted (same kind of thing as bootlegging I suppose).

The sound used to carry so far that you could here the films from Lefkosa to Cangar( the big roundabout). it was a lot quieter in those days. ahhh memories.

Saw a great film today . Remake of, "THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL" not bad.

Who remembers the name of the r

Steve, FYI, the building used in Towering Inferno has finally been remodeled, it was closed down for several years (due to a strike then some sabotage) , but it is now almost finished, it has had a complete facelift. Looks nothing like it used to.

It is next door to the Cinemas I go to.

Steve1953, There are no sets for the Towering inferno, I think maybe Universal in Hollywood may have had a ride or attraction many years ago, but have been replaced with newer attractions.

There was a fire at Universal a few months ago. I think the Psycho House not the Bates Motel also The Mummy (the ride and Back to the Future) burned down.

I made a mistake earlier and couldn't delete it, the main building used for Towering Inferno was in San Fransisco not in LA, the building I am referring to in above posting was used just for a couple of scenes.

Another great film:

Psycho - Anthony Perkins.

Pink Panther films. Every time I see Kato attack Clouseau, I roll around on the floor in agony from laughing so much.

Jackie's favourite is It's a Wonderful Life- still brings tears to the eyes. James Stewart was a decent man, who didn't shirk from serving his country in the most dangerous arm of the services [the airforce] when others found ways to avoid it.

First film that made an impact on me was - Bambi!

I came home & wept inconsolably over the wee fawn

whose mum was shot.

Few films have wanted to watch twice, but one was

Inn of the Sixth Happiness, based on the true story of

Gladys Aylward. I ordered the biography from library

called The Small Woman, (and she wasn't much like Ingrid

Bergman!) Her story was truly remarkable & even more amazing

than the film showed.

Barabus - frog eyes - Peter Lorre?

Nick - Mr Wick is a retired fireman - think he must have seen these films several times. Barabus - it was, in fact, Mr Wick that suggested this as his favourite film in the first set of postings!! LOL

Morning Geoff. "Inherit the Wind"? If you have had a change in your usual diet then this can cause your body to produce more wind than usual. If you regularly overeat then your stomach will have to work faster than normal, breaking down all the extra food, which can lead to more wind. Foods such as beans, cauliflower and cabbage contain insoluble fibre and take a long time to break down in the bowel, which can also trigger excess wind.

Have a good day

The other end of my cinematic spectrum is Gladiator.

In between the two we have stuff like Dead Poet's Society, In Which We Serve, The Mummy trilogy, Snatch.

The DamBusters

brings back good memories watching the Lancaster Bombers swooping down over Ambleside and then along Lake Windermere, fabulous sight. Just a young lad at the time.
