Predictions

Fairly difficult this year but my best guess:

France

England/Ireland

Wales

Scotland

Italy

Still awaiting a pint from the World Cup from 'you know who you are'

It will be much easier after the first weekend when we see the teems performance the Heineken cup does not give a lot of clues because of the inclusion of so many non native players.

England under Lancaster, proof will be in the pudding though anything has to be better than the last buffoon.

If you have noticed they are training at West Park St Helens, now those of you know the club and ground that will sort the men from the boys, bottom pitch on a wet January day!!

Ireland with no OD difficult to call I think they are in a very transitional stage good young players but need to gain the big match experience.

Wales getting there and probably unjustly on my part ranked at 4th I would like to be proved wrong.

Scotland big heart have the propensity to upset the apple cart especially with England but consiste

Scotland big heart have the propensity to upset the apple cart especially with England but consistently fail to deliver.

Italy getting there but no real chance but maybe turnover Scotland.

France, purely on their World cup performance I reluctantly rank them number one.

Now a public appeal for our well known sports correspondent to write more on the rugby scene the Heineken cup a major event has received no coverage at all. With no statistics to prove it a suggest that rugby received more viewers than football does in the local sports bars.

We love the anecdotes about the small white ball but please rugby as well.

My own humble opinion;

Our well known sports geezer always does fairly extensive six nations coverage.

He tells me that the Heineken cup thing is down to the randomness of the fixtures, which applies to the league as well. If rugby was as well organised as football I have no doubt he would feature it more. I agree on the locals in bars, but that is only for big internationals whereas on any given week football does well.

On their showing in the World Cup I'd replace France with Wales and bounce everyone down accordingly.

{Dons pith helmet and hunkers down for inevitable brow-beating and "I-told-you-sos" when being proved massively wrong... again}

There's only one winner................SCOTLAND!!

Our time is coming ahha and so is Christmas you may say but I feel this year we will spring a lot of surprises.

A settled team, bulkier forwards than in a long time, more players plying their trade away from Scotland- not a good thing but we always welcome our 'exiles'. England at home first, win that and as the late great Bill McLaren would say........... they will be celebrating in suachiehall street!!

Start with a win and watch the Lion get Rampant!

Riddles is on his crusade again goody! as a watcher and suporter I enjoy both codes but Riddles you have to admit it, support for RU has well out striped that of RL.

The RL internationals are really a joke aren't they?

RU and RL aren't now a class thing you know, you can eat your pies and sup your brown ale in the West Car Park as easy at Headingley or DW stadium.

It is good to see some of the young (in the past RL debutantes) comming into RU.

Here is a question why did Andy Farrell encourage his son into RU instead of League?

If you don't want to support the home nations RU you can always shout for France or Italy.

See you in the Celebrity -home of Kibris rugby and we can discuss it more over a pint or three.

Msg 14

"Rugby could and would have been a single code and it's only the fact that the officiators of the Union game staunchly stuck to the amateur ethos introduced in 1886, come what may that created and maintained the split. The labeling of the Northern clubs as rebels or splitters when they were really left with only one course of action open to them is an injustice which can never be undone." .....absolutely

Russell, I'm a big RL fan, and prefer RL to RU at any level.

However, I have to agree with Dave G that over the last 15 years RU has left RL behind in terms of organisation, sponsorship & attendances (both live and on TV)

Reason :- RL is and always has been a Northern sport stuck on the M62 corridor. No doubt it attracts far more spectators that the 2 RU premier clubs (Sale & Newcastle), but BECAUSE it is so Northern based doesn't attract a Nationwide support. Just look at the poor attendances at London Broncos (& last season at the now defunct Celtic Crusaders based at Wrexham). SKY gives RL good coverage, but apart from the Northern printed daily's, it just doesn't rate a full page in any of the National daily's.

Won't stop me watching what I consider the best game in the world, but I concede that RU is a far bigger sport both nationally & worldwide.

And I'll be there shouting for England at the 6 nations,

Max....

As I told you yesterday after the demise of that bully and buffoon Martin Johnson I will give tacit support to my unfortunates place of birth.

My heart of course remains with my roots.

As far as Italian and French, well we do have a French Huguenot ancestry on my fathers side.

I am very fond of pizza come to think about it and Barolo wine is one of my firm favourites.

Oh bollocks to it I'll just support who wins.

See you at the true home of Kibris rugby along with our convicted friend.

Hippo,

Your fellon friend has got a previous (engagement, not conviction ) on Saturday but will grace you with his company on Sunday. Wanting a win for Ireland, for no other reason that it will make for a real grandstand finish for the last game of the championship, unbeated England v unbeaten Ireland. Nnothing like blind optimism is there ?

6th Italy

Scotland lost it rather than England winning but definitely an improvement (Just)

There will be continuing debate about Hodgsons try but now the scores are on the doors.

Unfortunately I didnt see anything in England's game that exited me and gave me any thought to alter my former prediction of the final outcome.

The new pairing Farrell and Barrit, Ok Farrell kicked the goals but again no penetration, now compare that with Frances Rougerie.

Ashton again failed to impress I still would have liked to see Ceuto retaining a wing position.

Scotland put muscled England but failed to apply the coup De grace. the defence now has become so well organised that it is making the game dare I say a little boring. Recycle recycle wait for the opposition to make a mistake or get a penalty.

David Denton was awarded the man of the match, that again shows Englands ability to not impress the pundits.

Is this the new look clean cut, non dwarf tossing England that will set the world alight with open and dashing rugby I am afraid they still have a long way to go.

On the other hand look at France despite a little shaky start against a very determined Italy they scored 4 tries. They ran the lines they were adventurous defended well and then pounced.

I applaud Lancaster with his selection but England definitely has not got it right yet are England making changes for the sake of changes particularly in the last 15 mins?

I await in anticipation for today's game and hope to see a class act unlike what I saw today at Murrayfield yesterday.

And Kieth and Mart I did shout for England yesterday but probably not as loud as I sang Flower of Scotland.

Gutted,

However if Scotland cant break the gain line and score then you are always going to lose.

England did as well as expected- bah humbug- but credit where its due well done England.

Impressed by a lot of facets of Scotlands play, but still are the stupid errors. Parks had a shocker and can play a lot better than that.

Lions in the making, Denton+Gray and both just 21.

Pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down and carry on - as usual!!

Good entertaiment yesterday but far to many mistakes by both sides. Give penaltys away and you will struggle to win games. Still reckon England can win title.

Cinders perhaps you saw the scores of the weekend games without seeing anything

Thought France looked impressive at times and Italy are improving and could push a couple of teams close. England had these good fortune and its the score at the end that counts. Poor Scotland but an ever familiar story.

Thought Wales were the superior outfit for the majority of the match where winning was the priority not entertaining. However, thought both teams played their part in a fast flowing game, the complete opposite to England who never once looked like getting near the try line apart from the Parks error

The decider could be Wales v France, lets cross our fingers!!!

Mr The scarlets your obviously letting your celtic heritage mist your eyesite, I thought Wales would be far superior to any team in 6 nations after there World Cup performances, but no, they are playing with usual enthusiasim but technically not brilliant , only Scotland mistakes gave them the game. Scotland were far the better side in first 40.

Cinders, perhaps I can explain the technical side of rugby to you when I come over next. At your age perhaps stop at two Efes and enjoy the feast in front of your eyes, you will learn something

Thanks Gordon if Armitage was playing we could have a sweep as to what minute he gets sent to the sin bin

Gordon, the beer appears to be a little too strong for your punters, ever thought of watering it down!!!!

General consensus: so far Wales is best of Four Nations.

Do not worry!

We've just today had installed a proper JSC subscription - in addition to the one we already had so we have double-redundancy.

The matches will all be shown live at Celebrity's Waterfront - as they have been for the last 7 years.

This weekend's fixtures are:

Saturday 25th February

15:30: IRELAND -vs- ITALY

18:00: ENGLAND -vs- WALES

Sunday 26th February

17:00: SCOTLAND -vs- FRANCE

Wales got the deserved win against a hard working england team. Excellent entertainment and what a relief it was to us to see Young and Stevens coming on together, we knew then victory was within sight. Italy next before a finale against the french, who knows could be a gland slam match. Well done england for coming so close yesterday, Twickers not such a fortress, the Irish will be the next visitors so look out!

Hello Emma,

JSC is another name for the Al Jazeera Sports Channels. There are 12 and they show 6 Nations Rugby, some Premiership Rugby Union and some English Championship Football.

You can get it via some card-sharing sites though you can also buy proper subscription cards - which is what I would recommend.

I would remind rugby fans that the 6 nations is still available on BBC red button channels see appropriate thread on how to tune it.

My experience in the past has been that its OK on these foreign channels but you get no build up or match analysis afterwards.

Sundays match will be interesting unfortunately I think the French may be to strong for the Irish especially at home.

I would like to be wrong.

To our cinders I did not say that England were rubbish what I did say was that the some players did not perform to the standard that would be expected of professionals in the premiership.

As to a young team in transition come on that's the biggest cop out there is, as regards Lancaster, good enough northern Lad even if he did play for Scotland but the RFU didnt have the balls to come out of their comfort zone and appoint a real quality coach with a track record.

While I feel they have really moved forward in the past two weeks they still resort to 'if in doubt boot it out'

t would be rather churlish of me not to comment on England's success this weekend so; England played surprisingly well 'for a young developing team'.

I would rather describe them as a professional rugby players that have at last stepped up to the mark.

I thought England were refreshingly inventive and at times even magnificent, it is starting to look like a team that could go places.

Lancaster has certainly made a difference which supports my well documented criticism of that bully Martin Johnson's coaching style.

Whether the 57 will make the decision to keep him as manager I don't know, on this performance I would hope so.Now can England do it next week at 'HQ' where 50% of the crowd will be either talking on a mobile phone, celebrity spotting or asking their neighbour which one is Beckham? on yesterdays performance they just might.

Will Wales fall at the last hurdle, lets hope not but you know what they say about a wounded beast,in this instance lets hope it i

This Saturday

Italy to beat Scotland and leave the Scots with the wooden spoon !

France to beat Wales and put the Taffs in their place.

And of course England to beat Ireland.

Lancaster and coaching team to be retained by the RFU.

I wonder how many of those predictions I will get wrong through my rose tinted glasses ? But hopefully I will have wound up the Scots, Irish and Welsh enough to provoke comment.

Phil, we make allowances for you. Coming from Surrey you probably support Chelsea as well

Believe in one thing, the England bandwagon is coming to a grinding halt on Saturday

Agree, Lancaster has done a great job but not sure if he is high profile enough for one of the top rugby posts in the world after Wales

He led Wales to the 1976 Five Nations Grand Slam, during 38 consecutive caps, and went on two victorious British and Irish Lions tours in 1971 and 1974.

Truly one of the great icons of rugby, his name will live on.

It's here.

The major religious festival of the calendar: 6 Nations Super Saturday.

Who will get the wooden spoon?

Will France topple Wales in Cardiff?

How will Ireland celebrate St Patrick's Day at Twickenham?

(and just Who are these "Pumas" anyway? )

See you all at Lapta's The Waterfront. Sunny seaside terrace - stunning show of rugby.

PS Happy St Patrick's Day!

The final standings for 2012 after week 5:

1st: WALES - 10 pts (+51)

2nd: ENGLAND - 8 pts (+27)

3rd: IRELAND - 5 pts (+27)

4th: FRANCE - 5 pts (+15)

5th: ITALY - 2 pts (-68)

6th: SCOTLAND - 0 pts (-52)

A superb Wales deservedly won with a grand slam. They and a youthful, reinvigorated England suggest that the Northern Hemisphere can match anything the Southern Hemisphere can offer.

On a more sombre note, Scotland need to rediscover their pride. The match with Italy was one of the most pitiful displays of rugby in the last decade.

Well done all and thanks to all the Waterfront regulars for making this year's tournament so much fun to watch. The punditry was nothing short of dazzling

One swallow doesn't make a summer Gordon sahib, England just didnt make as many mistakes as a certainly off form Ireland did.

As regards taking on the southern Hemisphere I wouldn't put my pension on it.

To hear some of the fans??? talking afterwards you would have thought they had won the World Cup.

That is the ones that weren't talking, standing in front of you, parading around or talking on mobile phones. I never knew they made England shirts in so many sizes.

Congratulations though to England they did on the day deserve it, and I hope the 57 have enough confidence in Lancaster to give him the job. although Saries have said that Farrell isn't up for grabs.

Wales looked a little shaky again and at one point I thought the French may just take it, but they played so well at the end that the honours were well won.

Scotland were abysmal I really thought they were going to turn over Italy this week, I am afraid that Robinson may well get his P45.

Congratulations Wales you played well after a shaky first 20 mins. England destroyed Ireland, thats the best front 5 performance by England for a long time. Scotland enough said !! What a 6 nations it should be next year after another year of playing together England for the grand slam without dought !!!!!!

Thanks Bear, had a good day yesterday although wish I could have got a ticket to see the game

England looked very impressive but I must say that was the most disorganised Irish performance I've seen for a long time. Nevertheless, Lancaster has done a great job and hope the ERU reward him for an excellent 6 Nations

We were the most consistent team in the 6 Nations but had to dig deep at times

Another 10 days and I'll be back out in Cyprus, you never know perhaps Gordon may even buy me an Efes to celebrate a great 6 Nations tournament
