Wedlock by Wendy Moore, true history of Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother's great, great grand-daughter), the Bowes family. It is the story of how Georgian Britain's worst husband met his match in Mary Eleanor Bowes. I found it quite heavy going in the beginning but now I am almost finished and it has been fascinating and full of facts which were previously unknown. Just little things like the inception of the jockey club in Britain in 1752.

Another unknown fact is that whichever man married into the Bowes-Lyon family had to take the Bowes-Lyon name so the Title stayed in the Bowes family. I wondered what happened then after the Queen Mother who did not have a son and married a soon to be King? It made me want to find out. Very interesting if you love history.

Batterboy...i have been wanting to read that for a while now!!

I am reading Lasher by Anne Rice...it's the 2nd part of a trilogy about the Mayfair witches...utterly absorbing, everytime i read these books, i end up depserately wanting to go to New Orleans. Anne has shuch a way of turning a mere fantasy novel into something completely believable..like reading real history.

suehowlittle...i am rather intrigued by the Bowes-Lyon...as in this trilogy, the Mayfair name also must be kept to keep the family legacy tight and in the family.

the other 2 in the series are The Witching Hour and Taltos

I have recently read 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini - a fantastic novel which is both moving and uplifting in equal parts.

I can also highly recommend 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' by Garth Stein -

Just re-read the Yasim the Eunuch series by Jason Goodwin.

The Janissary Tree

The Snake Stone

The Bellini Card

An Evil Eye

Yashim Togalu is an Ottoman investigator in early 19thC Istanbul with links, albeit reluctant, to the royal court.

Goodwin’s use of well known buildings and sites in Istanbul and beyond as contemporary dwellings and locations of nefarious deeds, together with his descriptions of every day life, evoke the sounds and smells of the old city and bring the historic sites to life as no amount of guide books ever could.

Good twisty turny tales as well )

Just finished Love & Death in Cyprus by Harry Blackley (who served in Cyprus in the 50's)

What an amazing book. Not too heavy, with an biographical feel to it.

As its title suggests this is the story of the tragedies of Cyprus as seen through the eyes of a young, Scottish, national serviceman who falls in love with a cypriot girl, a story of love and loss.

Historically accurate, the book makes you feel the raw emotions of the people involved in that period of history and helps you to understand the dreadful events which happened in all the lovely places we now enjoy visiting.

If anyone would like to read this book - just email me and I will happily pass it on.

Tutor4U - message 46. Sorry..it's the second in the series. Dissolution is the first. Sovereign the 3rd, then Revelation and finally (so far) Heartstone.

Dark Fire was the first one I read...great stuff. Apparently BBC are thinking of serializing them (K Branagh as Shardlake?) Just waiting for the dust to settle after the last Tudors series last year.

As a 'Reacher creature' 9/10 for Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher novel 'The Affair'.

Also enjoyed Clive Cussler's 'Crescent Dawn'

Just started 'The Sixth Man' by David Baldacci - looks good

Have 2 other goodies yet to read - 'Shatter The Bones' by Stuart McBride (recommended by lady in Smiths at Gatwick) , and 'The Drop' by Michael Connelly.

Nothing like a good book to while away the cold, dark winter evenings.

A people's tragedy by Orlando Figes, a history of the Russian revolution from 1891 - 1924. I'd give it 8 out of 10 so far (I'm half way through it).
