On top of all the sufferings from the power cuts;

Since 06:00 this Saturday, our Internet connection from TTnet (Turk Telekom Net from Turkey, our Internet supplier) has been suffering severe capacity issues.

We have contacted TTnet and been told that all but one of the links between Turkey and Cyprus is not working and that one link is not capable of handling the whole load.

As the incident is quite fresh, they were unable to provide with more details or estimated recovery time.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide more details here as we receive them

Thanks Kemal. Although speed tests are showing me as having a 8.5mbs I was wondering why TV catchup or live tv was not working.

I think this is a great way of letting your customers know whats going on. Saves all the frustration of wondering whether its just 'me'. Well done.

agree fully with msg #8

If only the other provider had as much ability and informed peole what was happening.

Kemal is the thebonly provider that comes on here to admit there is a problem and explain what it is and what is being done to fix it.

We are still with Extend, but of feedback keeps as good with KBSat, may well be moving in the summer, provided I know that our internet phone will still work ok.

I wonder though if people keep joining with KBSat, will the connections eventually gte worse due to over contention, or just too much traffic, expecially with many people using the net for TV.

Just to confirm the problems with MM's external connectivity out from Cyprus via TTnet (Turk Telecom) are still manifesting. I am sure Kemal is this very minute doing everything in his power to get them resloved as quickly as possible.

yrret MM is comitted to keep scaling its network as necessary to manage increased loads as the customer base builds up and or avergage usage per customer increases. Congestion can occur in many parts of the network, on the indivdual device you connect through, from the base station to central point and in the link out of cyprus. MM continualy monitors the load levels on each of these sections of their network and as they approach 80% load it will increase the capacity in the necessary section. Streaming video does place heavy loads on the network but MM is comitted to proivding a network that can handle such loads now and into the future. That is what we do as a company.

Yes, it still looks like the problem is not fixed, we were told by TTnet that they are still working on the issue.

After a heavy telephone traffic, it now looks like the telekom office in Cyprus has deliberately sabotaged all lines as a part of the strike 'effort'

We are told by Turk Telekom that engineers are on their way from Turkey to help fix the situation.

Neither us nor Turk Telekom can reach any local telco engineer(we tried several by phone). The problem is at Cyprus side but noone is here to fix it (if it is a deliberate action, nobody would be willing to fix it anyway).

Anybody have an AK47 automatic machine gun or something similar they are willing to let us burrow?

I feared this may be the case Kemal but hoped it was not. It would seem we are all being caught in the crossfire of a battle between the unions and the government. Difficult times for everyone. :(

Oh dear. I spoke too soon by saying how good the speeds were. Hope I didnt jinx you Kemal!

But I agree, knowing what the problem is makes it so much easier to cope with - good for Multimax.

Only snag is it is great having the news put on the Forum - provided one can get on the Internet in thefirst place! I have only just been able to get on!

btw to the person who spoke about phones - I heard that Telecom are on strike now! What next?

It looks as if Telecom are playing up as well, it doesn't matter what number I dial on the landline all I can get is the engaged tone, luckily for me none of them are emergency calls.

Since 11:50am, Internet speeds seems to be back to normal (for now). We still do not know any information regarding whats going on between union and the Government. We will try to gather more information and keep you updated.

All restrictions on internet usage has now been lifted and everything should be working as intended for wireless customers.

ADSL service is still down! No information as to status of this service is...

Our multimax internet came back on in Esentepe fully functional at around 12 noon for an hour and has now gone back off again (on dongle just now). We lost electric power this morning about 10 am and I think we are still running off generator, but we did get an hour of Multimax during this period. Not sure what is happening.

We've not been connected to Multimax since about 1.30 pm in Esentepe. Even Turkcell 3G is sporadic connection, is anyone else finding this?

Hi Supersnooper

I have not spoken to Kemal today but my understanding of the current status is that some MM base stations are down due to power related issues. In addition to this it would appear from basic testing from my own home connection that the connectivity out from north cyprus via Turk Telecom link is also not operating at full capacity.

If you want to try and determine if your base satation is up or not, you can try the following. From windows icon in bottom left of screen either search for 'cmd' or use the run option and type in 'cmd' and press enter. This should open a command console window, with a blinking cursor. In this window type 'ping 8.8.8.8' (without the quote marks) and hit enter. If it then says 'destination not reachable' with the number 192.168.5.1, this would indicate that the base station you normaly connect to is down.

My friend is in Alsancak with MM and she is up and running although she says it is slow so it may be just the base station that you connect to Supersnooper.

These are trying times for all right now. MM is doing everything in its power to ensure as many of its customers are conected as well as possible. We are fighting both ongoing power related issues and ongoing issues with the core connectivity out from north cyprus via Turk Telecom. Hard information is scarce as to what is actualy happening with both power supply and trunk connectivity out from Cyprus to Turkey and thus it is hard to give any firm estimations of when service will be back to normal.

We would like to thank our customers for their understanding and patience during these trying times and will provide updates as and when we have any new information.

Julia as far as I can tell currently the 'auto vpn' service that allows bbc and itv sites to work without you having to do anything on your computer have been disabled. Given the current state of the connectivity out from cyprus which as far as I can tell is again operating in a much reduced capacity to normal, even if the auto vpn were working or you used an alternative manual vpn, you would not be able to stream video in any case.

Just to recap, the TTnet link reffered to in message one of this thread , was severly reduced in capacity as of about 6am saturday. As of about 11.50am it was back to normal. Then in the evening of saturday it went down totaly for a period, then cam back again but in reduced capacity mode which is how it has remained since and is currently, as far as I can tell. I am sorry I can not give better info at the moment. We just do not know who is in control of the TTnet link at this end in Cyprus currently.

I apologize I could not participate this morning as I had no power in my house.

Just came to the office and after checking the situation here is the current situation:

8 basestations in and around Lefkosa are down due to power related problems.

Karmi Basestation in Girne, as well as one of the 3 basestations in Esentepe, Bahceli, Kucuk Erenkoy and Tatlisu basestations are down (Total 5) also due to power related problems.

The rest of the basestations seems operational (as of 1:30pm Sunday)

One thing to note that, none of the basestations so far had the sufficient uninterrupted electricity so that the batteries can fully recharge, therefore, in an event of power failure, the backup times can be considerably lower than usual.

Now the electricity update is done, here is the info on Internet:

For all the customers who has a connection, you will notice that it is considerably slower than what it should be.

This is because the Local Telekom, have shut down all links to Turkey except for one small link. We are currently sharing this link among all providers and it is not even one-tenth of what we need to provide a reasonable service.

We have, since yesterday, blocked all access to VPN as well as some luxury sevices, so that the capacity is enough at least for basic browsing and emails.

And here is the final:

We cannot reach anybody at anywhere in Cyprus regarding the situation, and when this will be fixed. I have spoken to TTnet in Turkey and they claimed that teams have been dispatched from there to assist the government in this sitauation.

Tomorrow, being a workday is more hopeful for us to get more info about whats going on.

I'm a bit confused now. I've not had internet for a few days in Malatya, but have had electricity. You say that the only base stations that are now not working are "8 basestations in and around Lefkosa... Karmi Basestation in Girne, as well as one of the 3 basestations in Esentepe, Bahceli, Kucuk Erenkoy and Tatlisu basestations are down (Total 5) also due to power related problems. "

I don't seem to be in that list and so am beginning to wonder if the problem is me and not MM. Can you confirm whether I should be getting internet? Obviously when you have time.

Malcolm,

I could not find you in our customer database, if you can let me know the name the account was registered in, I will be more than happy to take a look.

Also, the information I had given was correct for the time I created that post. and continuously changing.

We currently have 2 basestations in Lefkosa Area, and Karsiyaka and Bellapais basestations (total 4) down and 52 basestations operational, best picture we had in days.

Also, if you read msg1 of this post, you will see that we are also experiencing problems related to Local Telekom strike, they currently have cut of most lines to Turkey and the internet connection is very slow.

For the past several days, it was also very difficult for us to perform any proper troubleshooting for our customers. With all these power cuts, low or high voltages, rains and everything, I am sure at least a few devices will need servicing/changing. However, it is very difficult for us to properly seperate these from everybody else that is suffering from power cuts and telekom strikes.

Our first priority now is to bring the regular service up and running, and we will be quite busy with that tomorrow, once successful, and provided both this and also the power problems will be sorted, we will then go back to our routine and investigate individual customer problems and fix them appropriately

Hippo - on strike and sabotaging because they are also public sector workers and they don't want to be privatised and who can blame them with all the perks, not to mention minimal work they have to do, why should they care they are running this country into the ground!

Kemal - good luck, this must be an incredibly frustrating time for you and any private enterprise trying to make a living. Thank you for keeping us informed.

Why do they do it, they have got jobs, they retire at 50. Why can't they learn from the events of the demise of the airline. In debt, bankrupt by June = no electricity for anyone and no jobs for them. They are over employed give too many freebies away and are running Kibtek into the ground.

What happened to Telecoms, was down Friday. The government sent some people in to sort it out and it came back up again and was great for a few hours. Then what happened? more sabotage? bloody crazy. This seems to be the only forum I can get onto at the moment. Facebook won't load in fact nothing much else will.

according to Cyprus Today only the billing & collection section of KibTek is going to be privatised. Is there a problem with where this money is going, or with it not being collected, perhaps? Something the employees don't want taken over which benefits them greatly. Now, I wonder, what could that be? What would the new owners discover? I'm only thinking out loud, no accusations of course.

ATMs will NOT work if they use any telekom infrastructure. There are some that use two-way satellite systems and wireless connections which MAY work, but its impossible to know which ones; have to try...

I can tell you safely that both kibtek and telekom have lost any sympathy they had from the people over the past serveral days by their illegal actions that only cause innocent people to suffer and nothing else.

To my understanding, strike means 'refusal to work'. It doesnt mean damaging an already working system and sabotaging current infrastructure at will. This is just plain wrong.

I have just heard news that Board of Ministers are in session discussing the overall situation with Kibtek and Telekom. Hopefully something will come out of it...

I agree completely, surely those responsible should be prosectuted for the sabotage, imprisoned, fined and made to pay for the damage. Their behaviour will not gain them any support and I would imagine by now, will have lost them any they had in the first place - just how stupid are they!

We have just got the information that Board of Ministers has just outlawed telekom strike as well. Union's reaction and the outcome is yet to be seen.

Unions have apparently agreed to resume work tomorrow.

160-man team has arrived today from turkey to reservice and put the steam turbines at teknecik power plant back in operation, that should solve the ongoing power problems.

From the telekom side, it looks like some of the ADSL connectivity is back, although some phone lines and internet connectivity is still not fully operational.

Hope things will be back to 'normal' by tomorrow.

There are currently a lot of power cuts and related outages all over Kyrenia and Lefkosa, but at least I am glad to inform you that the Internet connection from Telekom seems to be restored to normal as of 19:15pm.

Hope they also fix the electricity issue as well soon.

Hi Kemal,

We still do not have internet in Lower Bellapais, eXtend, not their fault I am sure. Fortunately we have a 'dongle' as well.

And so it goes - Sunday we had electric (mostly) and the land-line worked again (suddenly) but the internet was not available due to lack of connectivity - Not the fault of Multimax by the way!!! The good old ADSL light was lit on my router which I guess is telcon's way of saying "Well we provided the line to you, it must be your supplier at fault", they need to try harder than that with me I am afraid - 20 years in the business and no smoke and mirrors will cut it from strikers!

Today - Anyone want any electric? We have loads of it and to spare! ADSL light still on, no internet, again nothing Multimax can do about this.

Tonight - Around 18:00ish somebody came and stole all our electric - guess there are people out there who need it more than us so not worried. Reading by gas light then the gas ran out and reluctantly I went and started the generator. Good old Somerset statement - "Well Bugger I", the Internet is back.

Its like magic! Good luck to all out there, stay

I have ADSL, not through MM, but Xrealnet. Telephone lines and Internet through ADSL back to normal.

I pay for 4Mbps and have just tested and got about 3.5, which is fairly good.

Still no power since 6pm!

Hundreds of cars at Kib-Tek plant all day today. Maybe all the workers in NC having a union meeting?

Power went off in Karsiyaka at 9am - came back between 6pm and 6:30pm. I don't know the exact time because I had given up any hope of cooking and gone for a takeaway. Sod's Law. But at least the internet is back to normal.

I hope the library is open tomorrow because I have read 4 books in 3 days.

Bellapais Basestation has been down for 50 hours straight except for 2 very short period of activity. We believe there are more problems in that area than the general power issues. We will keep you updated if we receive any further info.

Apart from bellapais, All basestations between Karsiyaka and Arapkoy seems operational.

Karaagac/Esentepe and beyond is still dark.

Kemal, no idea if this has any bearing on the Bellapais base station, but this evening (when most places were still with no power) a Kib-Tek van appeared, checked out the electrical sub station in our road, made a phone call and Lo! our power returned, he told me they had had to fix a "broken cable"! It was a couple of hours before other areas around us had power, but it seems that Bellapais is still without power, judging by the lack of lights.

Yes, Bellapais is back! Hurrah!

Thank you for keeping us up to date over these past few dark days Kemal, not only with regards to MM, but also with what has been going on with regards to the strikes - the public sector could learn a lot from you!

Still only one bar showing on the internet logo when we normally have the full five bars. Is this a battery power issue?

CarrieRBag, it is hard to be sure from your question but I suspect what you are looking at with the '5 bars' is the signal strength between you laptop and your wireless AP (what most call the 'router'). This relates solely to the wireless link link between the laptop and the wirless AP/router box and does not indicate anything about the state of the internet connection itself. Low battery power on a laptop can depending on settings cause the laptop to reduce the power to its wifi raido device within it and this would lead to reduced signal strength so low battery power on laptop is one possible explaination. However wireless links like these are inherently variable from so many other factors as well as just power. Distance between the two devices, what is between them physicaly, orientation of devices and aerials attached to them, how many other devices are currently operating in the same 'airspace' and many other factors besides can all affect the signal strength as shown.

It is working fine from my home connection right now BigBro. If I goto bbc iplayer it takes me to the TV section (when it thinks you are outside the UK it takes you to the radio section).

What makes you think it is down ?

The UK server updates itself automatically once in a few weeks and restarts. In those situations, VPN software on the machine needs to be restarted manually. This has now been done and VPN is back to normal operation.

Thanks
