BREAKING NEWS 12.DEC.08

Former Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has died.

His wife and children were at the hospital when he passed away just after 1pm.

Papadopoulos’ death was announced by Director of the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital Theodoros Kyprianou.

Mr. Papadopoulos, 74, had been in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital for the past few weeks.

A Famagusta Gazette reporter at Nicosia Hospital said the former president died at 1.08pm today.

Papadopoulos was admitted to hospital on November 19 when he was complaining of back pains, and doctors later confirmed the former president was suffering from lung cancer.

Mr Papadopoulos was president of Cyprus from 2003 until the start of this year.

Details of his funeral will be announced later.

President Christofias has expressed his "deep sorrow" at the news.

Probably not the right thing for me to say at this moment, ( I can probbaly say it because I am not emotionally connected to the man) but its interesting how he has died so quickly afyter losing power. People who have alot of power and then lose it seem to struggle.

Not totally. Some still find other ways to channel that need.

Just read about some observations where elderly people who once had control and lost it died unexpectedly.

Surely he was not all that bad.

At least he was instrumental in preventing the Greek Cypriots carrying out ENOSIS by telling the people not to vote for the Annan plan.

Just think where we would all be if he recommened a yes vote.

Pike,

for once I'm at a total loss as to how somebody could have mixed up Annan and Enosis... and how the no vote prevented it...

Any idea? I'm stumped mate...

Gibson, don't hold back tell us how you really feel.

No matter what he did or did not do, the guy is dead and is still an ex-president(and a human being with family), a little respect would not be out of order..

Turbo,

You could use the same argument for many of the world's despots, so I don't think we would feel the need to show a little repsect for... well, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin..... the list is endless...

A man should be judged by the company he keeps I'm reliably informed by one whose name one dare not speak... don't tell him Pike!..

What, like he had respect for all the human beings who suffered because of his actions and so what if h is an ex-President. Hitler was more or less President of Nazi Germany, did he deserve respect? I think not

Suzanne

Yes I am for real and no I am not Mack. The difference being I have a brain which has not been indoctrinated into believing lies and duplicity unlike certain others who post on this Forum!!!!!!!!!!. You don't like my views and sentiments and I don't like yours. Why do you find that so hard to handle or do you and your partner just expect everyone to agree with you despite the fact you are wrong??

Gibson, A little OTT, I think, comparing a man that voted NO on the referendum versus a man that killed millions...

Just let him rest in peace and my condolences goes out to his family .

Nothing to do with voting . I am more concerned with his terrorist past when he was responsible for the murder of scores of innocent people ( admittedley not millions but the principle is the same). Also accused of laundering money for Milosevic so a real haven of virtue wasn't he?

Turbo,

I don't wish his family any harm, much as I don't wish ill to anybody related to someone I would not wish to associate with myself... why would I? I don't find them worthy of blame them unless they supported his asperations to do away with all T/Cs or they too engaged in activities that I don't find compatible with my compassion...

There are however many families who suffer grief and I sympathise with them equally... I'm not going to list them all or single out Mr Papadopoulos’ family for special treatment...

I think we should just leave them alone...

As a leading member of an association, i.e. no 2 in command, that had a declared aim of the total removal of all T/Cs from the island... and this association took part in terrorist activities that claimed many lives it is as reasonable an assumption that he had blood on his hands as the innocence that your question implied..

He made no secret of his terrorist past, partly as a political expedient which increased his popularity with the GC hardliners those who order or condone acts of violence by those they control are innocent... Or do you believe he was innocent?

Sorry Groucho, still not good enough. An oft-repeated lie does not the truth make. Surely you don't believe what one person has written in a newspaper?

Some facts and serious evidence please. I provided a neutral source which made no mention of genocide plans or ethnic cleansing of TCs. Have you been peddling this myth for years?

Little Boy in the Sailor Suit msg 30

By his own admission if you bothered to read rather than spout what you normally do.

As for msg35 you are taking your comedy routine to new heights by saying this.Still waiting for you to take upo my offer of a meeting with some TC.'s to discuss what actually happened or are you too afraid to listen to the truth. By your deafening silence so far since I made this offer I assume the cowardice has won!!!!!!!!!

Tiggy

You too should read a bit more as Papadopoulos has admitted his past on more than one occasion

Why would I want to meet you? To learn something about Cyprus or humiliate you in some way? I've said it before, but I would recommend you adopt observer status on the BB until you feel confident enough to speak about Cyprus and maintain credibility.

The so-called akritas plan here:

http://www.cypnet.co.uk/ncyprus/history/cyproblem/akritas.html

The Cyprus Conflict says the following:

The discovery of the Akritas plan, written in the height of the constitutional dispute by the Greek Cypriot interior minister Policarpos Yorgadjis, called for the removal of undesirable elements of the constitution so as to allow power-sharing to work. The plan stipulated an organised attack on Turkish Cypriots should they show signs of resistance to the measures, stating “In the event of a planned or staged Turkish attack, it is imperative to overcome it by force in the shortest possible time, because if we succeed in gaining command of the situation (in one or two days), no outside, intervention would be either justified or possible.”

It's a secret plan so you can't really find much evidence I suppose, but everybody including Pike knows that it exists and is the reason of current division in Cyprus.
