A dear friend of mine has a 4 month old baby girl. For the last 6 weeks she has had this constant wheeze. It's difficult to describe but.. it's just a constant wheeze and heavy breathing. She doesn't have a cold or runny nose or anything else that might suggest an infection .. she has had chest x-rays which have come back clear.

My friend has taken her to three different doctors who have all said that if they dont stick a camera down her throat to see whats wrong then she might suddenly stop breathing in the night - god forbid! Now she is torn between what the doctor has said and her instincts.

Both she and i just feel she is far too young at 4 and half months for something like this and that it could be asthma as it would be hard to determine/diagnose at such a young age. I know there is a lot to be said about the NHS (perhaps) but we sure miss the UK right now! Are the doctors here over exaggerating the matter? Or are they right?

Has anyone had a similar experience? or off

Have you tried speaking to Chris Offord, Nurseawful is her Cypruss 44 name. She is a Scottish nurse and helps run TRNC Healthcare. I am sure she will be able to advise you.

My eldest son had croup when he was a baby, which sounds very similar to what you are describing. The only way we could help him (over 30years ago) was to keep him in a steamy kitchen!

If you are still worried I can put you in touch with Becky who has just moved here recently and was a Health Visitor and registered nurse in the UK.

Ladies do you think it's sensible of them to want to do an Endoscopy at this stage? What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Becky - i sent you email with my thoughts - not seeing the baby it's difficult to assess - but as long as there is no signs of rapid breathing, shortness of breath, Cyanosis (blue finger nails/ lips) and pale skin colour, then i feel it may be more appropriate at first to trial meds/ inhalers for asthma - as these are generally safe for both children AND infants, with the benefits out weighing the risks - hope this helps -i sent email to u with more info. Have you asked the Drs reasons for performing an endoscopy before medicating - as yes it would be much more kind to babe to avoid the discomfort of having this procedure - although generally it is a safe procedure, but if they have a clear reason after assessing baby and concerned because her breathing is compromised that much - then obs the safer option would be for her to have that proedure. If there are any of the signs i mentioned above - she will need to see a DR/call emergency services asap. Has she seen a paediatrician?
