We are planning to come over in September. We want to hire a car in Paphos and spend 4/5 days in the South, then cross over to the North for a couple of weeks at our apartment, before returning the car and flying home from Paphos. Does anyone know a good car hire company to use ? Also whats the situation with insurance ?

Petsas car hire used to allow their cars north, but check with them. Found them to be quite reasonable price wise too.

You can ONLY get third party Insurance for the north (which you have to buy at the border). Any problems with the car it's your responsibility to get it back to the south...........

And any damage of course isn't covered by insurance, so think carefully!!!

I did exactly what you're planning to do last year. I booked a car from paphos with these folk .....

http://www.cyprus-car.com/

for a few weeks. I had no problems at all, in fact, I got a free upgrade to a 4x4. I took it acroos to the North (with their knowlege and permission) for several days, buying insurance at the crossing at Metahan on the way.

As Compass says in msg 2, you are taking a bit of a risk. You're legal, but if it breaks down you have to get it back to the South at your own expense and if it's damaged in any way, you're liable for the repairs. Having said that, I would do it again quite happily.

Hired a car in December from SIXT rent a car. No problem to take north.

You are responsible for all damage. If you break down in the north it is your problem.

3rd party at the border cost E35 for one month.

Drive carefully and good luck.
