In spite of servicings my generator would not start. Knackered by hand cranking it I decided on one last display of "the immoveable object meets the irresistible force". I sang the Haka, slapped my thighs like a Sumu wrestler, took a deep breath, shouted "wallop" as I yanked the cord with all I could muster. It snapped and I shot backwards from the shed landing on my back in gravel. The Wildebeest (bless her), shouted from the patio doors "Wot av you broken now you silly old fart". Replied "The frigging will to live". Went and paid 60 TL for new cord to be fitted but the generator sat stinking in the car for 24 hours as boot lock jammed. Had that sorted for 50 TL and finally was ready for Haka 2. When I pulled the cord it was only 12" or so long ! The moron who charged me for a new cord had simply retied the plastic handle to what was left of the old cord. Should you see a local with a black handle sticking from his rear end you will know that DD has lodged his complaint !

Steady Graham. I didn't knock at your door for a tip !

Tania. The generator is now fixed but it did not get me anywhere as the pressure in the central heating system dropped from one and a half bar to nearly nothing. The Wildebeest (bless her) spotted me sneaking into the Boiler Room with my box of trusty (and rusty) tools plus a power hose to rectify matters. She of little faith said "for goodness sake I will telephone a heating engineer before you flood the place" Obviously she remembers a Christmas ago when I blew up the workman who was fitting a new kitchen hob. Being profoundly deaf I thought he said "gas on" when he said "gas off".

Woodspeckie. As an old soldier "no names, no pack drill". Suffice to say, if I take power tools for repair again it will be to other than in Alsancak.

ranger5. Keep smiling and you will never be the "Lone Ranger"

Rigsby. The one in use now is British. The larger electric starter one was Chinese made and a total disaster. Peter had problems with it from new and in the subsequent years I spent a fortune on it but it only ever ran for about 5 minutes.

Bigbadbob. Look forward to seeing you both and hope the weather soon improves for you. My next project is to replace decking around the Fish Pond. Electric, water, planks, woodstain and power tools. Surely I can manage that in spite of a large degree of trepidation on the part of Wilde ? When I built it in 2004 Wilde kept warning me about the underground electric cable. I missed that but I did manage to rupture the main water pipe to the villa !

Never, never, never, ever, under any circumstances (even if you are skint) allow this man onto your premises to repair anything. He is the most accident prone person I have ever met. How the hell he has got to his age I will never understand, we say a cat has 9 lives, Brian has had at least 99 already! If he does not break anything he sets himself on fire to celebrate! Yes, really, ask him!

Poor old Wildebeest (Jan) - I think she deserves a medal!
