My cousin Salih Dayioglu died this morning in hospital. He was having cancer treatment for some time. He served as a judge for 39 years, the last twelve years as Chief Justice before retirement.

He was an exceptional judge and commanded respect from all his colleagues. His funeral will take place lunch time at Nicosia Cemetery. I expect a ceremony will be conducted at Nicosia Courts in the morning. RIP.

His son and daughter refused an offer for a special ceremony at the Courts saying that their father was always a very humble person and they preferred a simple cerenony at the cemetery only.

Here is a tribute from his old Greek Cypriot friend and colleague E.C. Lemonaris which was published in Politis Newspaper in Greek and in Havadis newspaper in Turkish. I obtained this English translation from the author himself.

FAREWELL MY FRIEND

I always wanted to appear in your court and argue the case of my Greek client before you. I am sure that your court would have done justice to my client. The qualities of a judge are to be humane and possess a fair knowledge of the law. You had these qualities in abundance. Unfortunately fortune played bad games on both of us. When I completed my studies and returned to Cyprus the evil to our country was almost done. The Turkish community was cut off from the rest of the country and lived isolated in enclaves. I knew that you were the president of the court in a Turkish enclave to which access was strictly prohibited. To me entry was forbidden and for you it was impossible to get out of the enclave. ctd.

After a few years the coup and the invasion occurred. The evil to our country was completed. Cyprus was cut in two. An iron curtain was raised in the middle which no one could cross. My desire to appear before your court was not meant to happen. For thirty years all communications between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots came to an end. In those lean years, nevertheless, we managed to meet on two occasions. This became possible because of the great respect you enjoyed among your community. You succeeded to obtain exit permits for yourself and for our other Turkish classmates. From our side we managed to secure entry permits for you and our other Turkish classmates. The bus carrying the Turkish graduates of the English School Nicosia of the year 1955 crossed the iron curtain and arrived at the Hilton hotel. The Greek graduates of the English School Nicosia of the year 1955 awaited to greet you with mixed feelings. ctd.

Joy and laughter mingled with tears of joy and sorrow marked the reactions on both sides. Joy because after forty years we had the chance to meet again. Sorrow because our common fatherland found itself in such terrible situation. In the bus which took us to Limassol and Troodos I was sitting next to you and monopolized your company. The day of our reunion, forty years after we left school, was one of the happiest of my life. The second time we came together again was your turn to offer us your hospitality. The bus with the Greek Cypriot graduates of the English School Nicosia of the year 1955 crossed the iron curtain and arrived at Seray Square. The busses which we boarded took us to Kyrenia and Famagusta. When darkness fell we returned to Nicosia. We passed through the iron curtain again and ended up in our homes and the routine of day to day life. The arrival of Spring in your community came relatively early. ctd.

In my community we continue to live in the dark ages and the blackout carries on. A few years after our second meeting the negotiations for the entry of Cyprus to the European Union came to an end. Europe desired the entry of a united Cyprus and wanted a solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the comprehensive plan produced by the United Nations. Your entire community came out in the streets and demanded peace. The so called progressive forces in my own community elected Tassos Papadopoulos to the Presidency. At the plebiscites which followed your community said Yes to the solution plan. My community said No. The chance to solve the problem was lost. My despair was greater than yours. You hoped that the efforts to reach a solution would continue. I knew that this was the end. Finally deadlocks resulted and the problem continues to be unresolved till today. In the years which followed the iron curtain dropped. The meetings between us became more frequent. ctd

Unfortunately the cursed disease shortened the span of your life. You were unable to see your country united. I do not know if we shall be able to see it. Farewell my friend Salih.

My thoughts are with you and your family for your sad loss, its a pitty that others high up in office were not so humble...instead of being so full of their own importance.
