I would have thought a more pertinent question might be:

"Why don't the French like anyone except the French?"

They are 'surrender monkeys'.

The reason the Champs Elysees in Paris is tree lined is to give some shade to German Troops during their victory parades!

I like individual French I also dislike individual French, I like France as the countryside. I like the French Ski resorts unquestionably the best in the World. I like French food and wine.

But I just despise the politics and in particular that weasel.

Is it just because we burnt Joan of Arc?

Message 13 - even french people in other parts of France dont like the Parisians.

This 'why dont English/French like each other is nonsence........... just because you go to Paris and the waiter/waitress is rude, or you ask someone directions and they are rude, doesn't mean all French people are rude. Maybe it would help if people made an effort to try and speak a little French when visiting, rather than expecting them to speak English.

It is a British thing abroad. If the local people will not speak English - which a lot of the French will not do - then Brits will not like them.

The British must be the most lazy / ignorant people when it comes to learning foreign languages

It's a French thing and they can't help being assholes.

Take Canada. Official language of Canada is English and French, except in Quebec Province where it's only French. Public sector workers (Inc postmen) all over Canada must speak French as well English, EXCEPT in Quebec where they only have to speak French.

Who let them get away with that????

General Wolff stuffed the frogs at the Heights of Abraham and they are still in Canada calling the shots!

I'd shoot them all with a cannon full of their own shite!

Sylvie - msg 17 - I think Turkish is more difficult than French. I am perfectly happy to speak French in France, and I took Turkish lessons when in TRNC.

Maybe the problem is twofold - firstly, many of the people the Brits come into contact with speak at least some English, and secondly many of the Brits in TRNC have older brains!

I have been living in Germany for nearly 4 years, and whilst I have always enjoyed learning other languages, I now find it more difficult to learn German.

Congratulations on your English btw, wish my German could match that standard!

▶ Haha, honeybee, you made me laugh and made my day! Nice one! Most English speaking 'contributors' on this board (mainly British people) can't even spell in their own language..!

A foreign language and Brits..?! No way. Their usual defence is to ridicule foreigners who try their best to speak and write the English language properly.

What is an Englishman? generally speaking a mix of Norman, Saxon and Angle blood lines..

Saxon/Angle = Northern Germanic

Norman = Northern French ,originally Norsemen/Scandinavian..

So which part of our own heritage do we hate most?.

Well, after reading some of the above posts, it is more or less what I thought: animosity and aggression caused by inferiority.

I see no other explanations.:(

Re: Msg 39,

Yes, it would be, dear.

Read Msg 38, and check you sight.

In Msg1, 'infuriority complex' was tongue-in-cheek, and in a 'modern talk' approximately

means 'infuriatingly superior'.

Sorry for the tedium!

Not the best time of the day for you?

Message 41. Yes, dear, I assumed in was "tongue in cheek" which is why I didn't comment on it earlier. However, since you amended it to "inferiority" in message 38, I thought I'd mention it.

Certainly, having an inferiority complex is something you'll never be accused of.

There is nothing wrong with my sight, by the way. However, I'd recommend you check your spelling in message 41 (line 3)

Hi,

I wasn't reading the whole thread, to be honest. But I would like to give an answer to the main topic question as well. The answer is: I give a shit!

I saw a great picture for this thread in Facebook today. Was showing the Earth from the space (can't find it now, so imagine it ), with the question "Do you see any borders?" ... That's my opinion. I don't care from where someone is... I care who someone is.

Thats my point.

Or rather: " Why don't the English like anyone, even themselves?"

You raise a good point, though dont think they hate themselves .Think its quite the opposite, the English think they are superior and cant understand when other nations see us as no better no worse than anyone else and get annoyed.

dont agree with you that the English having an inferiority complex is to blame .The Scots and Irish have often been accused of having an inferiority complex and yet dont hate or despise foreigners .

In defense of the English they are not the only ones with such views. The Japanese and Chinese tend to look on us as not being as worthy as themselves ,although they dont hate foreigners as we do ,but rather feel sorry for us.Iam sure there are many more examples in the world similar to English atitudes.

I like to hear a French person speaking English, in the majority of cases it sounds lovely. French was the only language on offer in my school, that would be in the 'olden days' though. I love France.

As someone who lives in France, I would say the French are petrified of losing there place in the world as are the Brits. Unlike English, French is in decline as is Gallic cultural dominance in areas like food and fashion. The French pretend to be Europhiles but they do little other then take subsidies and guilt trip the Germans into paying. In the UK the utilities and trains are owned by foreign companies mainly from the EU yet in France these sectors are fiercely protected by the state.

France has amazing healthcare. Wards are becoming a thing of the past, no medicines lottery. But taxes are high and they have the biggest bureaucracy in the world. they have more tax collectors then the US.the French strike abt anything including changing the colour of a bus ticket. It is a nanny state in the truest sense.

"the Scots and Irish don't hate or despise foreigners"

Try walking down Sauchiehall street on a Saturday night with an English accent.

Also stay sitting in your local (in England) Irish centre when they play the Irish anthem.

''Try walking down Sauchiehall street on a Saturday night with an English accent. ''

Have you tried it? My son in law has ,just about every weekend ,and has had no trouble . I would probably have more trouble with my Edinburgh accent.

I have tried working in London though !!

You said to Martin

Martin D41; you conveniently forgot the nice German visitors in the forties. Then again I imagine it was a bit like Vichy.

Your remark just points out what we are talking about. We are talking about French German Dutchmen Indian African etc. but where we think of French German, you think Nazi, Vichy. Its 2012 if you dont like foreigners just say so,dont use 70years ago as an excuse. Not only is the average young french or german not of an age to have any influence on these events ,nether are their parents.

Similarily,I would , resent it if South Africans used the excuse of the deaths of the Boer women and children in that Brit invention- Concentration Camps ,to revile

As for Sauchie, I have no problems in Dunfermline but the argument stands. Did you have any hassle in London?

I think not.
