We all seem to focus on Cancer checks these days and I will still be doing the Womens Health Week in March.

In the meantime though i have been to Cyprus Life and negotiated a good price for Cardiac checks for all.

The check includes bloods, Treadmill test, ECG, Echo and consultation with cardiologist.

Normally this is 560tl for the next few weeks it is 370tl.

If interested e-mail me on trnchealthcare@gmail.com or telephone me on 0533 884 5621 between 10am and 4pm weekdays.

wow, I thought 'that is just what I need' and then thought 'I can't afford it' and then thought 'Dare I not afford it?' As far as I know I am O.K, but, big question - when you say 'for the next few weeks', please tell me until when????

Chris (Nurse) whilst this is slightly off topic, I am concerned that when having my chest x-ray at Girne State Hospital yesterday, the door was left open, several young men were waiting in front of me at the open door way. Please could you highlight the dangers if any about this or do you know anyone that can. Kind regards, Mrs Snakes.

There is absolutely no danger to you the door being left open. However it is a very thoughtless and not good practise to do so, as it gives you yourself no privacy.

The amount of radiation from a chest x-ray is not a lot compared to say a CT scan which is approx 400 times more, so repeated exposure to this would be dangerous. It used to be said that the radiation could harm an early fetus but not sure how accurate that info is.

Me again, glad it is supervised at all times. Would the blood test check platelets as I have Essential Thrombocytopaenia ?

nteresting thatwhen I wanted an angiogram in U.K, years ago, I was tld I could not have one as it is too dangerous. Had I a heart attack, then i could have one tocheck upowhat's what, but before that, it was too dangerous. Have hey now improved technique?

Marion,

I presume that message 16 has a good reason for asking for this, maybe on Doctors advise! Wouldn't think she would want one just for the sake of having the procedure done.

Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of sudden death. This disease is caused by the buildup and eventual blockage in the coronary arteries that nourish the heart. A severe spasm can cause a heart attack, which may can result in sudden death.

The danger of this disease is that there may be no previous symptoms or warning signs. So, having a medical check-up is one of the best way to prevent you from having coronary artery disease – before it’s too late to treat.

My step dad died very suddenly on holiday in India on 11th Jan this year of a massive heart attack at the age of 58.

When he was here in June he complained of chest pains and went a grey colour so I took him to the doctors immediately. (Not one related to Nurse Awful or the said health test)

I actually asked if he could pay and have an angiogram and was told he would need blood test first to see if he had been having mini heart attacks then take if from there... His blood tests came back indicating no heart problems so was told there was no need for angiogram and his chest pains were because he was a smoker.. I shouldnt have listened and should have insisted..

I want my mum checked out when she comes here because I know you cant just ask for one in the UK.

the reason i wanted one was because of high cholesterol and wanting to know if any damage had been done etc. so sorry to hear about your step Dad, becki. it must have been extremely upsetting, but it is a good warning to all of us to find out what is going on inside. I still don't know and I can't get to this set of tests, but will when I can. if only we had little machiens at home so we could see the inside as we see the zits on our faces. I am sure one day we will, but for now, we have to use what is available.

Marion - cholesterol checking kits are readily available in the UK from pharmacies. They are not particularly expensive. They are also available from Amazon.

Sorry to hear about your step-father. At the very least the clinic / hospital should have done a 24hour tape on him. http://www.johnsom.com/johnsomauroo/24_Hour_Tape.html

Chest pain of any kind should never be ignored by the medical profession everything possible should be done to find out the cause!

Yes I know, Looking back through his diary he had recently also booked an appointment with the doctor in the UK for pains in his neck, which he was given anti inflammatries for, when I googled the medication he was prescribed, a contra-indication for the medication was heart problems.. All the signs were there but they looked at everything else first. I now read neck pain is also a sign of heart problems.

I believe these specific tests that you are running are a wonderful thing, its never too early to start keeping an eye on yourself.

Well done and keep up the good work you are doing x

Chris, hi

Would these tests in your opinion detect an underlying problem if i recently suffered an exercise induced ventricular tachycardia

BPM 220 for approx 10 mins.

Message 28,

Yes thats the reason they do the treadmill / stress first (after the bloods) then the ECG and Echo. The echo is a brilliant diagnostic tool and will pick up almost any slight problem.

Thanks for highlighting this very important topic Christine!

I had a heart attack in June this year (at 41 yrs old!) It was an enormous shock to me and my family.

I had warning signs for about 10 weeks before it happened, but dismissed them because they weren't 'text book' symptoms. The main anomaly was all my chest pains moved mainly down the RIGHT side (arm, shoulder blade and jaw) I had always presumed it would be the left, so carried on. The pains were bearable, squeezing pains that reached a crescendo and eased off after about 5/10 minutes (these episodes got longer and longer). Luckily, I saw a cardiologist here who told me I was in trouble and needed to take immediate action. I got back to UK and discovered via 2 angiograms, echo cardiogram, blood tests ETC that I had a blocked and ruptured artery (97%) could have been fatal. Although I was very unlucky to have this happen to me at 41, I feel extremely lucky to have survived. So my message is, please dont think you have to be

Although not a lot of people taking up this great offer Samantha, the majority are women. Although at a guess the incidence of heart attacks here are mostly men!

Sorry to hear you had problems Sam, glad you are okay now, no doubt you had to make a few lifestyle changes as well!!

Message 42, Nothing to eat or drink before the blood tests but you will be given time to eat before the treadmill / stress test. Either take a sandwich with you or there is a small cafe on site.

message 43

From Girne head to Lefkosa at the first big roundabout in Lefkosa turn right. Approx 50yards on that road keeping in the right hand lane you will see a slip road crossing the opposite carriageway, take that and hospital approx 50yards on your left just after the Effes sign.

I have been getting calls from people who have been suffering palpitations, shortness of breath and or chest pain but too frightened to go to the Doctor or didn't know where to go.

I had the cardiac check this week, very thorough although no treadmill, & I was in & out in 100 minutes!

When will the next cancer check be as my friend wants to go for one please?

Thanks for organising these Chris it does give a lot of us the nudge we need to get ourselves checked out!

ozankoys,

The Womens Health Week will be this month have still to go and see about it and see what discount on offer!

Should have went yesterday but with the weather decided to stay at home, warm beside the fire. Will let you know as soon as I get the dates and prices.
