Hi,

We arent South Africans but we lived in Durban for 10 years.

I did see a car here with South African flag stickers on it, and I hear rumours, but I havent heard the accent yet

I think there are a couple around.

Hi key-jor several years ago there were young brothers living in NC, who were from Cape Town. The elder brother used to run a shop in Karaoglanoglu but that was a few years back. The shop is not there anymore.

The car you saw going around with the SA sticker on it may have been mine but I am no longer on the island. I lived in South Africa (Jo'burg) for 34 years then it all went tits up!

Hello Msg 1 - yes there a few around in North Cyprus. We have just moved to UK, after 4 years, my husband a born and bred South African and my sister-in-law lives there still and she has a a couple of friends from SA.

You will find many people who have lived either in SA or Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was then). When you are ready to move back to the TRNC, if you put a posting on here, I will, with her permission give you a contact.

Also, a couple of Irish friends, who lived in SA for 40 years (I am sure they should be entitled to call themselves SA's) - lovely people!!!

I know we shall miss it, the mountains, the sea, and the friendliness of the Turkish Cypriots, however it is something we had to do. We shall go back for holidays though.

Msg 9. Not a lot of copper mines in SA. Phalaborwa is the only one that comes to mind. The big copper bonuses were to be had in Zambia (Northern Rhodesia)

Pub in Paphos is Keg & Barrel in Ayiou Antoniou St., facing Almyra Hotel. Home to Paphos Rugby Club and owned and ran by 2 lovely S. African brothers, Theo & Pano. Very welcoming atmosphere and excellent food.

Yes there are SA's living in the TRNC. We met several through our SA friends who moved out here at the same time as us. We bonded over quarantine but after four years they returned to SA. They still visit here though. They also introduced me to afore mentioned Irish couple. Lovely people.

Struben, message 8. Hope your move back went well. Pam told me about you going when they were over at Christmas.

Msg #19 - I fly to SA 6 times a year, great service with Turkish Airlines from CPT or JHB (same plane), and prices are very good, so good in fact that many Dutch and German passenger fly via IST. Worth a look on http://www.thy.com

Leaves CPT 17:00 on current timing, leaves JHB about 20:00.

The flight times are about to change (March) so from SA will land in IST about 05:00am, then connect on to ECN at 07:15, home in time for mid morning coffe.

If you change airline in IST remember you will have to pass imigration/collect bags/check in again etc.

Very easy, however if you need to cross to the south can you do this easily on a RSA passport? not sure about that, I am guessing ot's not a problem, but don't know for sure.

To All,

I have dual ctizenship (turkish & SA), my children the same... however my wife is still waiting to be granted a turkish citizenship.

I would like to cross over, which ever way is easy. Do you feel we should enter through the south or does it not really matter anymore since 2003???

What did you guys find most challenging when moving over to NC?? if we settle in Alsancak< how far is the English primary schools???

Kj,

You may have problems if your Turkish nationality is know, as mainland Turks cannot cross North to South, but they can enter via recognised ports.

Your name/family name may be a give away, your first name looks like if deffinitely will.

You shouldn't have any problems going south to north, but be very careful if you try to go the other way on your RSA passport. You can't on a Turkish one.

Also, remember, if you enter via LCA, and say left via ECN, then re-entered via LCA, the system would show you had not left so would identify departure from north.

If you check out flights, I am curious why you would not want to fly via IST, easier and probably cheaper than going via south as you will have to then go via Athens, or Cairo (or one or two other routes).

Air Egypt do a regular service to JHB and on the CPT from Cairo, and connect on the LCA, not sure of the prices.
