Perfectly real. 3D printing has been around for a while now. Not yet ready for the 'home market' but may be before too long. There are all sorts of limits on what you can do and may different types of printing material. Have a look at this one that uses icing sugar for example

Same basic idea. you print layers of a liquid material that then hardens and then you print on top of that hardend surface. Another variant is 3D laser printer that beams a laser into a bath of special iquid material that solidifys when the laser hits it. So scan the laser in your shape, drop the bath by a fraction of a mm and scan the next 'line' and so on until you have a solid 3D object.

In the not too distant future all you will need is a small workshop to produce small production runs of certain parts without mass assembly based production lines. This will reduce the cost of specialist manufacturing in the early stages of new product development.

They sell for around USD 1000 in the US... Just google for 3D Printer... I would get one if it was sold here but I'm probably the only one so not a big market
