Is it frowned upon if you don't leave a tip? What do you consider to be a good amount to tip?

Jimmy, would you tell the owners why you were not leaving a tip? Or just walk out?

It depends No1...if the food's good, the place is nice and is only let down by poor service I do say why, but if the food's poor and I feel that it's been a waste of my money I don't bother as I won't be going back.

Lilli as the employer, are you not responsible for the low wages?

We do tip as a norm if the meal was enjoyable and the waiter/s are pleasant without being too interferring... can't stand people flapping about asking if everything is OK all the time...

It has happened that we've been asked no less than three times during one meal! Quite off-putting...

PS

I don't tip a percentage because it ought to be in reverse proprtion to the cost of the meal.... i.e. if the meal is cheap and great they deserve more than if the meal is OK but expensive.... If you give a percentage you are rewarding high prices and they may have spent no more time and effort producing it... albeit from more expensive ingredients...

hi grouch we are of couse responsible but with the social security for the work permits etc our margins are so low it would be wonderful if you could get totally experienced staff but you know they would never come here and as much as you try to train them its not a passion only a job, however loyality counts and we do pay over and above but they are still grateful for the tips. they are good people and we all do our best xxxx

All the comments I have heard from Cypriot friends is you do not tip and tips are not expected.

A problem is developing where people are leaving the level of tip they would in Western Europe and USA and some staff now expect nothing else from tourists.

We leave a tip according to meal and service. If it is poor then no tip!!

Call me tight, what ever, but i am against tipping, you do a job knowing your wages, you do it to the best of your abilty.

The same with taxis, they earn a good living (can only speak for the UK ) without tips.

Members of my family work for the NHS for very little money, wiping backsides etc,the only tip they get is,could you work a bit faster.

I know so many people who tip but are really against it,but have told me they feel they must.

Some of the restaurants here actually take the tips off the staff and use the income as part of their profits... now that is outrageous.

We don't give tips if the service is poor... we only give them if the service is good. It becomes a bit more difficult when the service is great but the food is below par as it's not the waiter's fault.

It's generally a low wage job here and it's therefore difficult to justify not tipping if you would elsewhere in the World where they may be better paid already..

Some people just don't want others to make a living... well you can't come back in the next life and earn a decent crust!

I'm less inclined to tip in London where the earnings are higher... and I really hate the automatic adding on of service charges of up to 20%... That too is outrageous and yet it does go on in London...

You get service charges in America as well even if the service is not good and the food is rubbish.

Groucho,i know about the boss keeping the tips, outrageous, can i swear?

Brandy sour,i think you are in your rights not to pay if your meal was rubbish, not sure on that, went to Cuba, just like the tv advert,no matter what they do for you, they expect a tip,so you can imagine how i felt with my views on tipping, but when you talk of people being poor, they really are

As I read it, a certain restaurant here maintains that they pay above the normal wage to thier staff and that is why any tips are kept by the management, not saying I agree with that, but the service is very good at said establishment and the staff very good.

In some parts of the USA it is expected that you tip 15% and they will tell you if you dont...but tippingto me should be left to the individual, but as has already been said on this thread , why should you have to tip, people get paid to do a job and its up o them to decide if there wage is enough for the effort they put into it..

msg 22,

Tipping in Australia is certainly allowed, but tips are only given in appreciation of very good service and not as a norm.

As for USA, many places expect 20%!!!!! Several years ago my parents did a coach trip in California and they were "TOLD" by the tour company how much to give the driver. The said driver while en-route told the passengers about his 3 houses, several cars etc!!!!!!!! My parents as you will imagine gave what they could afford and what they felt appropriate.

As above, tipping is for service above the norm.

hi alll its not just restaurant staff who rely on tips, i always give my hairdresser a tip as i think they deserve it and we all know the wages are bad here, also the window cleaner gets a tip from me.

When you think that most of the wait staff are on minimum salary and depend on any tips to make up their wages.

Yes , here in the US it is customary to tip 15%, is expected, some people tip 20%, if the service is really good.

The only places that automatically add a 15% "service charge" are hotels,(not all).

I think in this day and age that people should leave some sort of tip, a lot of places pool their tips so that everyone gets a share.

It is unheard of not leaving a tip. They are taxed on tips whether they make them or not.

If you get really bad service then I can understand why you would not want to tip.

Do you also not tip your hairdresser/barber? or at xmas time you dont leave a little extra for the postman (UK ).

If you answered no you do not tip , just thank god I am not the person waiting on you next time you go out, , you may get a little something extra in your water or food.

They make minimum wage, every little bit helps. you would rather have an extra drink ins

cont...

They make minimum wage, every little bit helps. you would rather have an extra drink instead, to you it may only seem like pennies but to them it is why they take on a job that pays so little.

So think about it next time, when you make the waiters run back and forth to keep bringing you stuff to keep you happy.

Back in my working days in the hospitality industry in the UK, I remember that 15% "service charge/Gratuity" was added, you had the option to cross it off you didn't want to pay it.

I guess thats why the US will always be the US.. generous and thoughtful of others situations, not everyone makes a fortune.

I was told last time in Cyprus that I should not tip, it gets to be expected and spoils it for everyone else that is CHEAP.

I used to waitress and like many countries the wages are crap but is made up for in tips. This is in the best interest of the restaurant owners because they know their staff will work that little bit harder.

I would not tip if i thought the owner was keeping the tips for themselves and i would happily complain if i thought my food was crap but only at the beginning. The worst customers are those that eat the meal and then complain.

I would NEVER eat a meal that had been sent back to the Kitchen and brought back out.

Kenny msg 21,

You are quite correct - posts have been removed from this thread. Mine was a joking one saying "Most of the tipping in the TRNC consists of old fridges and garden waste." Nige's was similarly light-hearted.

I can only assume some absolute idiot with extreme paranoid tendencies has been hacking into our BB. After all, a moderator would never act that way when no rules were being broken, would they? People who believe in free speech and democracy don't tolerate such antics.

We'll see if there's any explanation before I start a thread about the subject...

"it is a shame the mods do NOT RESPECT THE MEMBERS and delete non offensife posts"

What is this then....? It's not good enough to post a reprimand and then follow it with "I am not complaining" as quite clearly, you are...and shouting to boot.
