If it is from the UK then the last time I checked it was a maximum of £8000 out of the UK to anywhere but be careful and check up with the relevant authorities. They have got and do use sniffer dogs at airports to detect large amounts of paper currency. Be prepared also to prove how you obtained the money. If the authorities are not happy with your explanation then the money will be confiscated until you prove how you obtained it. As far as the TRNC authorities are concerned I don't think there is a limit to what you can bring in but I am sure someone else will correct me if I am wrong.

If you take out more than £10,000 CASH out of UK you have to declare it to UK Customs on the way out. All to do with money laundering.

HI Spud,

In June 2006, I had £7.000 on me when I went through Stanstead airport. It was to furnish our bungalow and to pay our lawyer. I had asked at Barclays bank and they said there were no restriction the amount you could take into the TRNC. I had the money in a brown envelope in my handbag. When I went through security, I was stopped and they searched my bag, asked what all the money was for. I explained and showed them receipts from 2 different banks.

I was marched off to a small room and had to repeat my story again to someone else. After looking at lawyers letters and the receipts, they said I could go. I have never been so frightened in my life. I have not heard of anyone else that this has happened to and I don't know why they picked on me.

Make sure you take receipts for your money.

Internet or wire transfer is much safer method.

The above comments about being stopped have been mirrored by others leaving the UK, anyone leaving the UK with a bundle of cash is liable to be stopped on account of money laundering.

Other thing to consider is insurance? If you loose the money in any way your insurance will more than likely not cover your loss.

We opened a Nationwide account and withdraw the cash from ATM for free- however you are restricted on how much you can withdraw per day. we have a joint account with 2 cards so can make two transactions per day. we felt it was safer than having bags snatched /money lostetc

Hi Butler's Wife

I have also been marched off to the little room at Stansted by Customs and it is indeed a bit frightening. We had £10k in a brown envelope in a holdall that also contained a round stone lamp that looked like a comedy bomb on the x-ray (so not surprised I was searched). We had no idea there was a maximum which I think they told me was £4k. I didn't have anything on me to prove the money was mine but did offer to log into my account on the internet. I was told that if they were not satisfied they would confiscate the money pending investigation. Anyway they let me off. I asked how much money could be brought into the UK and they said they didn't care how much came in only how much goes out! Probably the same with TRNC.
