Hi Can anyone help I am looking to have 2+ established Olive Trees in my garden and would like if possible to try and save perhaps 2 or 3 that were being uprooted and left to die . Any advise or thoughts much appreciated

David We had 4 moved a few years ago by Olive Tree Rescue (now left the TRNC due to government hastle) - only two survived. The trees will need very heavy and frequent watering for at least a year - if you do not have a well with plenty of water, do not even consider trying to move them. If you do move them, all branches should be removed before transplantation - we had some left on which may have caused extra strain on the trees and hence their demise. I don't think there are any professionals doing transplants, but Gagari in Karsiyaka were used for the digging out with JCB/transport/re-planting Good luck Mark

Ask at Burhans furniture store, Dileks brother used to rescue them they will know. I am sure there are a lot waiting to be re-homed. the place used to be near Bogaz, coming down the hill towards Lefokosa, turn right at petrol staion and somewhere back there. Cost (used to be) is about 200 quid for the heavy trucks that have to transport and lift. A deal if youre lucky enough to get an old gnarly tree. Now is the perfect time for transplanting . its great that people still are interested in giving these trees a home. if only they would stop cutting them down for logs. Are you burning olive logs this winter????

Mark "The trees will need very heavy and frequent watering for at least a year - if you do not have a well with plenty of water, do not even consider trying to move them. " We rescued one and the watering was minimal, it's doing fine too... it was pollarded before being moved (i.e. it had most of the branches removed) so that it could concentrate on putting down roots.. a JCB was used to dig a good root ball up with the tree and of course a deep enough hole for it to sit in..

When it is planted just make sure that you want it placed in the way you would like it to grow, even though you have to prune it to almost the trunk, it will still grow in a certain discretion. Once established you are stuck with the way it will grow. We transplant all the time in Beverly Hills into new homes , as the jcb is lowering it on to the hole you can turn it to to right position. It costs a lot more than 200 quid here add at least one more zero on the total per tree. If you can get any of the fertilizer stakes, it is highly recommended you put a few around the trunk.

As far as I know, it is illegal for anyone to cut down tree's, if you notice that they are going to be given the death sentence you may want to notify the local muhtar or belediye. I know, Pine, carob, OLIVE (number one) and almond amongst others are illegal to be cut down. Some of those trees can grow for over a 1000 years. look at this old specimen, 1500 yrs old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Olivetree_1500yrs.jpg

Oh yeah I forgot to add, they can live for 1000's of years til someone who would like a villa or a complex built and it is blocking their view and there it goes.

Nothing to do with Olive trees, but discussing the best way to transplant a tree brought to mind a palm tree transplanting exercise I witnessed in the middle east. Scores of palm trees were dropped into their prepared holes, earth packed carefully around them, and then they were watered. The trees had all been pollarded. I did think they looked strangely bristly at the top, but as I knew nothing about transplanting trees, or what sort of trees they were, I didn't think any more about it. My friend though burst out laughing because he reckoned they had all been planted upside down. A few days later they were replanted the right way. I don't know if they survived this experience as I moved shortly afterwards.
