What a stupid system here. In the UK I never saw a house with windows opening inside. They have caused so many breakages in my house. Has anyone else had items break because the windows open inside. Also restricts where one can put furniture.

Could be because so many people have shutters here?

the only advantage i can think of for windows opening inside is that you can install stationary fly-insect nets from the outside and forget all about it..

Message 1

Not as silly as you think. The reason is so that like most CT's you can fit shutters and in the summer you can open up your windows to get fresh air without letting sunlight in.

Re: Msg 1,

Furryfriends, the rest of the world have them opening inside!

It is stupid to have them opening outside - you can never clean them properly.

I know a lot of people in the UK who have installed the windows opening inside.

And I am going to do the same!

Which breakages are you talking about?

This got a good response.

Message 11

Opened the window, didnt notice the cutting board was in the way, 8 glasses smashed.

Painted a headboard, draft came and window opened, headboard fell and broke.

Think my house is doomed.

So yes shutters or fly screens thats why. Had them 7 years ago but they all blew off when wind came.

I do understand the reason for the windows opening inside as stated above, fly screens and shutters however, I will never understand the reasoning of radiators over there, here in Blighty they are under windows as you would never put furniture there and your curtains can go behind them.

NC is a different matter, they are just placed randomly and in awkward places.

When in Rome and all that.

Re: Msg 12,

Don't you have catches in your windows, or tilt -and- turn?

Haven't you noticed that in the rest of the world windows are opened inside?

And that in the rest of the world that have MIXING water taps!

I was in Germany (RAF) 1980 and all the windows were tilt and turn I was converted and have had them since and replacements as pointed out easier to clean just a pain with nets and curtains when you want to open them.

Re: Msg 13,

How can the curtains go BEHIND the radiators, if the radiators are usually fitted close to the wall and you have LONG curtains, as most people do.

Then if you close the curtain , you will lose all the heat from the radiators.

I was dissapointed when I realised the windows here opened inwards, had no window ledges to place bric a brac, the reason I was given being on an elevated site..... 'The wind being so strong would blow the window frame outward causing damage should it become undone from its fixing. I am not sure about that but think sliders are a better option.

really wished I had slide windows or tilt. They were fitted before I moved here.

Good response though, stopped me getting bored.

Mindy

I always liked ornaments on window ledges.

Another thought why do they not have fanlight windows, its nice to go out and leave little windows open. Cheaper than fitting wrought iron over the windows looking like a prison.

"..slide windows " "...window ledges".

Do you mean sash windows and window sills?

I thought it was because of health and safety they are not allowed to open outwards.............

We had a tilt and turn door/window and it was the bain of my life, the hinges are always way too small to carry the weight of the door and always drop, which means is is difficult to open and close......my new regular one is much easier!

The definitive answer from an ex window manufacturer

Open out in UK is to assist drainage of the window. Due to number of rain days in UK windows were designed to help water drain from the outer frames to the outside of the building and not to let water into the building. The opening sash covers the outer frame. In continental Europe because rainfall is less they opt for inside opening windows. Also inward opening windows are safer on ground floors, especially when so much time is spent outside, because there is less likelihood of a child running round a building and colliding with an open window. In UK now an outward opening window on ground floors should be fitted with restricting hinges, and upstairs windows should be fitted with easy clean hinges.
