I took part in the walk yesterday and although the course was quite hard, our gang made it the end and thoroughly enjoyed it. We took along our own packed lunches and ate them without leaving a trace behind us, all our litter was packed into our bags and carried with for disposal at the end. Oh how I wish I could say the same for our dear Turkish friends!! They scattered their plastic wrappings, empty bottles and carrier bags, with gay abandon as they walked, totally oblivious to the mess they were leaving behind them! What is wrong with these people? Have they no respect at all for the environment of this beautiful country they live in? I even tried to shame some of them by picking up the litter they had just dropped, but they just don't seem to realise. The government here needs to launch a massive anti-litter campaign to drum the message home. They should be taught " take away nothing but memories - leave behind nothing but footprints". Pam

Pammick; Please let me know when there is another walk as such and I would love to join you. I shall then have the opportunity to put the idiots in their place! (you can contact me on turkishlessons1to1@yahoo.com ) In any case, the organisers of such events should be responsible and ban such nature murdering idiots from any further participation after a warning!

I also did the walk, came in last or possibly only 2 behind me but as I am very unfit and found it extremely hardbut I am really pleased that I managed it, when my muscles have recovered I will continue walking and aim for the centre of the pack next year. The reason I am posting this is to ask if anyone knows the participating numbers. The previous posts are correct about the litter and it was a shame but may I add that it was lovely how everyone mixed and encouraged each other regardless of nationality.

Hi bigOz, sorry you missed the walk this year but it takes place every year at around this date in February and information was posted on this forum, so all I can say is keep your eyes and ears open next year, we would be glad to have you join us. This is the first time they have done the Arapkoy to Catalkoy route and I have to admit I found it extremely tiring, but congratulations to all of you who did complete it and many thanks to the orange man who kept us all refreshed and to the team of drivers picking up people who could not walk another step. As I was not involved in the organisation, I don't know about participant numbers and how much was raised, but I am sure this will be covered by the press this weekend. You are quite right Jenny the comeradere is great!! In spite of the litter louts, we were all there for the same reason. Pam

Yes, shame about the litter louts. My carrier bag came in handy when group in front of me threw their plastic containers to the side. Does anyone know what plants the locals were picking? There were a few of those. maybe herbs. Spectacular views............think the newspaper photographers should have walked it. Well done to Catalkoy Beledeysi for the refreshments at the end. A very welcome cup of coffee indeed. and not too strong either , just right.

Actually i commented to my walking companion how much cleaner the path was from our normal walks with the dogs so i had assumed the Belediyesi had cleared the route. I know when we stopped for lunch at the 'village' we were definately in the front section but after lunch we noticed the new flowers milky way, mars and twix wrappers! well done for everyone for organising it

Message 6 - They were mostly picking the Medditeranean sage which has health benefits (can't remember exactly which though!). Holland and Barratt sell it - it is not the same as the sage we are used to in the UK.

judyr, They use it for Adaçay (tea) and it can be used in cooking in just the same way as cultivated sage, I find it just has a more subtle flavour. NB you should avoid this sage in all its forms if you are pregnant as it is known to cause miscarriages.
