Deniz,

Sorry for causing a mix up. I meant that I am coming with at least three people i.e. myself, my wife and mother in law. There may be more like my daughter, grandchildren etc. There is no limit.

The chosen spot is on the left of the Girne/Lefkosia highway, the entrance is by the turning for St Hilarion I believe. If I am wrong I stand corrected!

Oh my goodness....don't want to put a dampner on the picnic but maybe someone should go and view the place before you all meet up there. It's an absolute disgrace.Went past the other day ,you couldn't see green for all the rubbish everywhere. There are more lovely places to picnic than there .

Chinaeyes,

I think this is a general problem in Cyprus. Its a well known place and let us start with this one. Next one will be in Famagusta, we can decide on the exact spot nearer the time. the one I have in mind is Bedi's place. we will see.

We could all take black bin bags with us and give it a quick tidy up. Well not the whole park just the area we will all be congregating around.

Maria and Vic. I will make a note in my busy diary for now elko. Well done Maybe we could have an Egg hunt too

Spider,

A very good idea, we can clear up the place as much as we can and will that put the locals to shame? Huh, water off a duck's back

Dippersgirl,

What a shame. Cyprus is such a small place. We will be going from Famagusta. I am sure it will be well worth it.

Dippersgirl,

Sorry to hear that. Did they nick your driving licence for speeding or you never had one? ;)

I hope you can find someone to give you a lift. I would have loved to but unfortunately I will not have the spare space.

You are on my list of "must see".

Thanks Ismet for the offer, no, never had a driving license, I'm a bicycle person. When we were in London it was easier than a car. When we moved to Wiltshire, it was a bit more difficult but we had the railway station on the Waterloo - Exeter line. And all traders deliver. as Tesco advertise - we deliver to your door - your fridge door - wish Lemar started that service(would be a surprise everytime, what goods you get, I think), sorry a bit off thread.

Dipkarpaz is a bit more Difficult, I have to admit. There is a bus, but not on Sundays.

I posted this on the original thread on 14th but this thread seems to have taken over now.

"As I was passing today I dropped into the Bogaz picnic site to have a look.

You need to know that the tables and benches provided are immovable and are very widely spaced (20 to 30 metres apart - even more) and relying on those will not be conducive to a group atmosphere. There is one cluster of 6 or 7 that are about 8 metres apart just as you enter the site - but there is no guarantee that this cluster will be available on your chosen day.

I therefore suggest that everybody plan to take tables/chairs/rugs/ BBQ trays if you want to be together as a group or that somebody volunteer and go early and "bag" the prime cluster of tables - maybe if there is a German tourist planning to go!"

Well well well, a dig at our German friends but I did hear the same complaint about their towels on the beach or round a pool. I suppose there is some truth in it. Come to that, I don't think the Turkish Cypriots are any better

If I'm allowed back in (And I can't see any good reason why not) after my trip to UK, there is a ninety-nine per cent chance you will get your lift to the picinic. Mind you, if you saw the state of the place you might change your mind. But as someone has already mentioned, if we all pull our fingers out when we arrive at the picnic area it can be spik and span in no time.

Depending on the number, I may be able to finance the food side too (nothing fancy, i'm open for suggestions).

I don't think more than 500 people can make it. Even that's really hard.

What do you guys think?

Izzet,

Thanks for the suggestion but it will be very difficult to estimate the numbers in advance. I think everybody should bring their own food and drinks and any beer you can supply as already promised will be an added bonus.

The Chamber of Electrical Engineers organise a picnic every year and there they provide the charcoal and the meat but the numbers are known about a week in advance and it takes place in a private location. We are holding our picnic at a public location and therefore any free food may get out of control. Anyway, these are my thoughts. what do others think?

Is it not possible for you to contact the Girne Belidiese and inform them of our intentions, to picnic, date time etc., with the hope that THEY will clean up the site before 500 potential journalists (!) arrive and report on the state of the place?

We will of course leave the place immaculate when we leave !

Gerry,

How about organising a team of volunteers preferably from Girne area to go and do the cleaning up? How about calling them the C44 volunteers of Girne?

Any offers?

I would be happy to attend a clean-up if the Girne refuse-dept. are not up to it !

Suggest Saturday PM so that it is ready for the Sunday Bash !

Girne Refuse dept. should supply the trash bags and a vehicle to remove the collected rubbish.

Any other volunteers?

It's imperative that the collected rubbish is removed by the district authority after it has been collected or dogs and wild animals will have it scattered about by the time we return the following morning !

I agree that Cyprus 44 Markers should be set out. I'll get my dobermans to do some picketing !!! LOL

We could do with some more volunteers Mike.

If we all took bin bags and spent just 15mins to collect the rubbish beside us, it will not take long at all,

We could eve plant some geranium plants too They are weeds over here after all ! and it will brighten the place up with a little colour too

All we need now is a banner saying 44 fun day. And a few ball games too.

Think positive and all will turn out just perfect.

So have we any ideas how many are likely to come. I do think it is important that we have some kind of organisation. There is a nice little cafe on site and it would be good iff we gave him some trade, but I reckon he needs to be forewarned in case he needs extra stock.

I reckon we can bring plastic sacks for rubbish prior to th epicnic and rubbish of our own after the picnic, and I do agree that the municipality need to collect the sacks quickly. I know it is putting a lot on Elko, but I am sure he is a very efficient (and busy man), but iff contacts could be made to ensure that all goes well and gives Cyprus 44 a good reputation on the local scene, that would be a bonus.

Oh and always willing to help, but preferably not to be toilet cleaner for the day.

Put me down for 2 please, Elko. I have 4 friends in UK trying to find cheap flights out on the 7th. They didn't know it was Easter, bludy heathens. If they make it we'll be 6, mebbe 8. If they don't you can put 2 down for site tidying. Unless Leeds United are on telly. Have bag, will travel.

Gulcatay,

This is a public picnic place. You shoul bring your food and drink and if you like charcoal for cooking. You will not pay anything. See you there.

İsmet bey,

I live about 2 kilometers away - I might decide to jog down there on that day! There is no telling what the rest of the people living at my place will want to do. So if I come alone and bring along my own şeftali kebabı, can I use your fire?

Just a reminder folk that we need some volunteers to attend the site on Saturday 7th April at 2 PM for a general clean up of the site.

Bin liners, for the rubbish collected, will be required and I hope Ismet or Elko will contact the Girne Beledisi to request that they remove the rubbish bags, filled and collected by the volunteers, before they are ripped apart by wildlife, prior to the event.

A suggested time would be at 5PM on Saturday 7th April for the rubbish to be removed.

As the area is a large one, is there any preferred part to be cleaned? The area is too big to clean it all up as that would take a week !

What are the expected numbers attending the picnic / bar- b- q ?

I wasn't expecting you to come all that way Ismet,.

I'm sure that half a dozen of us can have a good go at clearing the site on Saturday afternoon so that it is nice for people to turn up to without having to worry about starting a clean up before the party begins. !

I would notify the press, who can take pictures of people cleaning up - that might set up an example to others and motivate them to keep the place clean. The only problem is, although it would work with the T.C.s, my own experience during my last trip to the area was; the main culprits were the mainland settlers/workers, some of whom arrive in vans, typically leaving behind all their dirt. AND they do not read T.C. papers like Kıbrıs.

The other suggestion I have is: Lets have a similar picnic once a month at locations where there is need for cleaning. Most of the beaches along coastline from Alagadi going towards Esentepe are full of plactic bags, cans and bottles...

would love to help on the 7th, but it is a big day at Lamboussa with fun, games, running, stalls etc, etc oh and music, and it is an all day event. And a lot of people will be there, so don't think we are not interested in helping. Just not a practical time.

bigOz,

I hear what you are saying but I for one will not be going around the beaches cleaning up everyone elses mess and garbage. That's why we pay council taxes !

Also by doing it once a month it takes too much effort and the enjoyment is not the same.

I don't mind cleaning up for the first one but after that it's up to others, or the local council to do THEIR JOB ! (The tourist board should assist also as it is they who wish to promote tourism!)
