I was under the impression that there were no tides in the Med but this morning I was at the beach in Karsiyaka and noticed that the sea had gone out further than I have ever seen it, revealing rocks that are always under the sea. Thought about fleeing to higher ground. Anybody else notice this anywhere.

There are indeed tides but given the volume of water in the Med as opposed to the big oceans like the Atlantic they are moderate in size... Do you know that the gravitational pull of the moon will cause a small tide in your swimming pool and bath....

Doctor: And did you drink your medicine after your bath, Mrs Soap? Mrs Soap: No, doctor. By the time I'd drunk the bath there wasn't room for medicine.

Hi, Tidal range here does not generally exceed 1 metre, and is usually less - the times of the biggest range are around Full Moon and New Moon, with, I think the latter being slightly the larger. A very good site for tidal predictions: - http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/EasyTide/index.aspx Keith.

Greater tides than usual are due to the fact that the Moon has, in the last week, been closer to Earth than for many years. It's a historic wobble thing! I Forget the details, but something like 30K Kilometres closer and appearing 14% larger and brighter than normal. Don't Panic!

At perigee, the point at which the Moon is closest to Earth, the distance is approximately 360,000 km. At apogee, the point at which the Moon is farthest from Earth, the distance is approximately 405,000 km.

So it was the pull of the moon that caused you to keep capsizing, so that 's explained it!

Nope that was total lack of sailing skill...plus the magnetic pull of the water.

I noticed something very strange. One day last week I went to a beach and found the tide further out than usual. I then went on, the same day to see another beach expecting the tide to be out and guess what? It was not. I couldn't really understand this. Any ideas on this?

The tides go in and out... maybe by the time you'd gone to the next beach it had started to come back in... plus the slope of the sea bed makes a big difference to how far the sea goes out. In the UK some tides go out for miles and then rush back in... that's what caught out the Chinese winkle pickers so tragically.. It's also why Southend pier is so long... to get out past the mud! ;¬)

Yes, I do know all this already. This is why I was so surpsised. The sea near Antique restaurant was further out than usual exposing a large beach and rocks that I had never seen before, so I drove to Kaplica to see what it would be like and it was in as normal where I've seen it many times before. Just found it interesting.
